Alexandre Dumas referred to this place in his novel "La Reine Margot." Corneille wrote "La Place Royale." These arcades were the domain of the merchants, who sold their wares according to the dictates of Henry IV.

Oh how incredibly lovely. I can imagine it full of merchants and people, I can almost hear and smell it many many years ago.

Thank you so much for sharing your world!

Argh! How could anyone even consider turning such a beautiful and historic place into a parking garage!

Once again, lovely images..

The city of Paris thought to make this place a parking garage, but this project was abandoned in 1970, and the trees were replanted. The renovation of the square and the fountains only happened in 1988!

Now a place in Paris i like :) Thanks for the picture :)

But you make it sound as if it had been a wasteland of sorts (between the buildings) till 88. While my grandma was taking me playing in the sandpit there when i was tiny, before and after 1980. I "think" i even have memories of it before they put the high grids around, and replaced with them the fairly low ones from before - but i might be mixing with another one on that.

What's for sure is that i got really badly told of for waddling in the fountains there, and it was way before 1988 !

Thank you for your words!

I do not remember it as a child, but was told it was very neglected. I do know they ordered the complete renovation in the 1980's.

That is a nice memory, the sandpit and the fountains, thank you for telling me!

A tiny "thank you" for all the beautiful pictures you post :)

And the chestnut trees in bloom - the one in front of the statue, coming from the rue de Birague, was flowering in pink, while the others were white :)

I had forgotten i knew that, actually..

What an incredible place, and part of one of my favorite stories.

I will now dream of being one of the merchants, laying out my jewelry under those grande arches.
