Racing recap

As has been remarked elsewhere, the Apple Blossom went from being the race of the year to a bit of a farce. Zenyatta was as lovely as ever, but those poor fillies she walloped yesterday were just nowhere near G1 caliber. Nice paid workout for her connections though. :D Rumor has it she's headed to the Stephen Foster next at Churchill, and then the ( Read more... )

I think Stately Victor also had the benefit of field that ran themselves down, so he just had to pick up the pace at the end. It really did look impressive though, his ears were pricked and he looked a lot like Zenyatta, just out there for fun.

I don't know what Zenyatta's competition will be like though - I think a lot of people don't want to throw their horses up against her just to lose (when she is doing her happy little canter across the finish line while everyone else struggles to catch up) - there were so many horses vying to race in the Apple Blossom until Rachel dropped out (the money was a big part of that, I'm sure, but I know people were also hoping those two would run each other stupid and let someone else pass right by).

I love Looking At Lucky, but his name does seem to be a curse. Ekendereya is lovely too.

If you're going to go to the Stephen Foster, let me know. I'm going to be at the KHP that weekend for Egyptian Event and could go back up to Louisville for the race. Plus I have free admission to Churchill (all but the derby and oaks days) through the Kentucky Equine Education Program.

Eskendereya just reminds me of Bellemy Road too much for me to have faith in him at this point. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong, but I think Lookin at Lucky might be a better choice if he can find that luck. Certainly he's had the experience he needs in adversity!

I worry that Eskendereya might be a Bellamy Road, too, but E at least had an easy romp and hopefully has plenty left in the tank. BR set a record in his Wood and left his Derby race at Aqueduct, I think. Dunno. He's still a bit of a question mark. I'm really interested to see how he'll fare against LaL if he manages to get a clear run.

I totally agree! I'm finally getting excited about the Derby this year. :D
