ghetto poll

Jan 25, 2006 12:07

Upon discussion with some coworkers I have discovered that the words 'the Donner party' do not hold any significance for as many people as I thought.

Anyway so on to the poll portion.
Before googleing, researching, reading comments, etc do you know who the Donner party was, why they are known?

That is all.

I as born and raised about 2 hours from Donner Pass. I even have pictures of me sitting on rocks there.

So, yes I know. They became stranded in the winter in the Sierras trying to cross into California on a wagon train is the 1800's and had to resort to cannilbism (sp) to keep alive.

That is the story most of us know. I saw a recent article (in lsat 2 weeks) about that forensics clear them of actually being canniblized themself as the family camp was a ways away from the main camp where there is evidence of it.
So far that is to CA natives + me that know and one TX and one TN who dont

That's interesting. laicee January 25 2006, 18:33:18 UTC
I hadn't heard about that. Was it on TV or the innernet?

We were taught the "westward movement" every year in history from about the 4th grade on. The Donner Party was always a great part to get to because dumbass kids always wanted to hear about people eating each other.

Now, ask me a Texas history related question and I wouldn't have a clue.

*snerk* - one can only imagine why you folks were talking about cannibalism and wagon trains.

But then again you could have been talking about my favorite which was that soccer team and the Andes mountains... mmmm -

Oh and you finally make a post and its about this. nice.

It started out as a conversation about the whole line of jokes with names like Mike Hunt, Amanda Love etc and I made a comment about how Pam and that group of friends and I always teased about telling the reservation lady at Outback that we were the Donners just so they would call out the donner party over the loud speaker. Cheap easy snickers.

So was that a yes you knew to start? This is for science!

mwah, at least I didn't go have BBQ for lunch. :)

nice. I had drive thru and a rip off by the post office. They stole my 22 cents. Stupid machine. And I was so not gonna waste 30 min of my time to get back .22. I am not always sure what my time is worth but I am sure it is better than that.

In recent history.... pelli January 25 2006, 18:29:40 UTC
They are known in the animated movie Alladin (sick joke for 5 year olds) where Robin William calls out 'Donner, party of five'.

I do not recall where but a plane crashed and people were left to canabalize one and other instead of enjoying some good ol' Texas BBQ

;) It is a cartoon classic move. Throw in some jokes for the old people about sex, pop culture, other adult references.
