The Noah Clan is a band of gypsies traveling around the European countryside in brightly colored wagons, putting on shows whenever they stop. They'd never stay in one town longer than two weeks and never any shorter than one night, even on the outskirts of town nearer the slums. Many towns tolerate them, but there are few that summon the guard and ignore any of those that try to make business. These are mostly very religious and very strict people, Christians who don't tolerate things they don't know/understand (or want to). After one stop in such towns the wagons tend to stay far away from them, asking those more sympathetic to their plight to trade for them.
There is a tradition of this group of gypsies for the son or daughter of a couple to pick a bride/groom when they come of age (13). The parents will then steal away into the night and kidnap this person for their child. The clan as a whole will then brainwash the child and give them a new name, and ultimately this renamed youth will believe that the gypsies are their family. And thus the lines never are too inbred. Cyril chose Melody, later renamed to Tricia, who became Rhode's mother. Tryde, Cyril's brother, chose Tyki, later renamed to Joyd. Rhode has her eyes set on a young boy in one village named Allen Walker, while her cousin - in name only - Alma has her set on a fellow named Yuu Kanda.
Unfortunately, near one of the towns that vehemently disliked the gypsies a few industrial young lads decided to make certain that the vagabonds knew they weren't welcome. Late into the night they stole away to the ring of wagons waiting a few yards from the town and set fire to the barn they assumed the gypsies were sleeping in while the camp was dark and quiet. Inside were only two occupants, Tricia and Tryde, busy composing new songs and working on the choreography. Joyd (Tyki, then 21) rushed into the barn to try and safe them but it was too late and lost his voice for the effort and got a few burns. He was not blamed, however, for not being able to save his new family. Rhode (then 8) latched on to her uncle, slowly helping him find new ways to express his desires where his voice no longer could. She often acts as a translator when needed, at least she did until one town.
In one of the "nice" villages - Rose Village - an elderly man named Mana Walker started teaching Joyd (Tyki) and Rhode a series of hand motions that could be used to make things less complicated (ie sign language). In this same village is Mana's grandson, Allen would also help during the lessons when not being dragged to his own schooling by his friends: Kanda and Lenalee. There are two survivors of another gypsy tribe within this village, waiting and hoping to be absorbed or at least picked up by another set: "Gramps" (Bookman) and Lavi. The Noah gypsies often frequent this town because of Joyd (Tyki) and Rhode's lessons, not to mention the beaus the two youngsters have their eyes on. Adam (the Earl) and Neah (Fourteenth) are still debating on asking the two survivors of the Bookman gypsies to join them. After all, it requires an empty wagon and they don't have one of those...yet. Three would be required and three shall eventually come into being.
