I'll be 29 in a few months, and I'm only now about to experience the death of a pet. My family didn't have any pets until I'd moved out (I always joked Kitty was my replacement), so when Kitty died earlier this year, it meant nothing to me. But I've lived with Alex for almost 5 years now, and knew him as a kitty before that. It's going to be weird ( Read more... )

*hugs*

Just because people have experienced death before does not make it any easier. I am so sorry you are going through this.

*hugs* When our cat Muffin died I was a little sad but I suspect it will be harder when Percy and Andy go because I take more ownership in them.

So sorry for your loss. Losing pets is always hard. It doesn't matter your age. Even though I'm no longer living with the pets I grew up with, it's still rough to know when I visit again they won't be there. It makes sense that you're dealing with this now since your family didn't have pets growing up. For a lot of people I think grief for a pet is different as an adult than it is as a child anyway, just because of our ability to understand the loss, as well as our attachment to the animal (since as adults we're usually the ones who take care of it, which promotes attachment, like Christie mentioned).

My condolences. At least he was loved; he was a lucky cat to have humans like you and Paul and Melissa.
