Valiant as that appears on the surface, it is a very cunning way for pro-lifers to have their way by creating precedent for classifying fetuses as humans at any state, even at conception. Not cool.
And rightfully so, although I wouldn't use the word 'cunning.' Apparently this 254-163 vote reflected that message. I guess it all has to do with one's definition of a human. Of course, I say, good for them. Not an extremely good chance it will pass in the Senate, however. We'll see.
you're right- House Dems hypocritical hereryanfet82February 28 2004, 13:05:34 UTC
Matt, you're right on the money here. I find it absolutely sickening that the House Democrats have the audacity to put up their own alternative bill, which is blatantly hypocritical:
"Approval came after the House rejected a Democratic-led alternative that would have increased penalties for attacks on pregnant women in which the fetus is injured or killed without conferring new rights on fetuses."
My point -- if the House Dems are unwilling to confer human rights to fetuses, how can they justify increasing penalties for attacking pregnant women? If the the fetus has no legal status whatsoever, there should be no reason to increase the penalties, because it's just tissue. The Dems are merely trying to save face on this topic. If they don't want to give the fetus legal status, then they shouldn't claim killing a pregnant woman is any worse than a non-pregnant one.
