HA! Okay, that's damned annoying. Maybe they can publish about it in the Journal of Irreproducible Results???

Yes, bad science in TV is irritating. Trust me, I wrote 'Firestorm'. I know exactly how hard it is to sex and race a badly charred body. And the answer to that is 'very'. *kicks writers and their imaginary 'scientific consultant'*

I can't even imagine how broken I would make the TV screen if I were you watching Bones... I have a habit of throwing things close to hand when I see stuff like this so my laptop has all sorts of Sharpie marks on the keys.

It's like they're just throwing a salary away, I swear. Whoever they hired has either no Googling skills or relies on a molecular model kit and textbooks from the mid-40s.

Hire me, damn it! I could do a WAY better job than whatever boob they've got doing it now!!!

Wow, they did fail spectacularly.

As for the explosion size, they need to watch mythbusters - real explosives do not blow up a car in a fireball. Although mythbusters showed how Hollywood does do the whole fireball thing, and its with gasoline in jugs, with a lot of wires connecting them so that they all blow synchronously.

And googling acetone hydroxide is hilarious, one of the links is to a WikiAnswers page, on which the answer states, "Be aware of the danger of this experiment ! You create explosives by doing this. The handling of this product is very difficult and only useful for suicide-attempts. Terrorist who want to survive take other stuff to build bombs.", which amused me.

It sucks when TV doesn't get the science right, and in this case, there are so many good explosives to use for blowing up a car, they really didn't need to fail so hard.

Mythbusters! I love that show! I always see Adam and Jamie and think Hodgins would make them the perfect evil trio. Except world domination is a little sketchy for TV personalities.

Googling explosives is good for the soul (if your soul is having a bad day). AP is one of those chemicals that if you make it and get it too hot, then shaking/dropping/breathing on it will make it blow up (the more stable version is fun but has less burn). And if you think the AP is cool, look up thermite on YouTube -- they burn through a car instead of blowing it up!

Your comment over on 206_Bones about Hodgins licking the arsenic was so true. I get this little mental picture of the writers sitting down and saying "Now, how can we dumb this down so three year olds get it, but still SOUND like we're smart?"

One of these days, I'm going to start a group about all the ways TV fails at science...

Yup, its awesome no? I'm sad I can't watch it on TV anymore (I stay at my grandfather's in Toronto when I'm at school, and he only gets whatever channels are free). They would. Except they wouldn't be evil, it would be epic explosion expositions! Teeheehee ( ... )
