(Jaejoong- 23, Yunho- 25)
They are married, Jaejoong giddily thought to himself as he moulds a clump of clay into some sort of a sculpture. At first, they lived in a two-bedroom apartment in a two-flat in Myeongdong. It’s monochromatic with dark cherry-colored wooden floors and a kitchen full of the stuff they got from their wedding presents. The apartment acted as their experiment, since they performed research on each other. He discovered that Yunho hates the sound of clinking cutleries together; it gives him Goosebumps most of the time. They agreed that it was okay for him to listen to rock music and for Yunho to listen to the mainstream pop music as long as the other person isn’t around. They figured out that Yunho should do the repairing and laundry while he should be in charge of cooking and cleaning.
They fell into a routine. Yunho goes to work on the weekdays through Saturdays at the biggest public library in town. He usually gets up at six in the morning and starts coffee before he gets into his running clothes and goes for a run. When he gets back, he showers and dresses while Jaejoong gets out of bed, chat with him for a while as he fixes breakfast. After eating together, Yunho brushes his teeth and hurries out the door to catch the train, and Jaejoong goes back to bed to doze for a few hours more.
He wakes up to a quiet apartment after a couple of hours. He takes a bath, fixes his hair and puts on his work clothes. He pours another cup for coffee for himself before he heads towards the back bedroom which is his studio.
At first, he had a hard time in his tiny back bedroom studio since the space that he can call his, the place that isn’t full of Yunho, is so small that his ideas were turning smaller as well. Eventually he’s getting used to it but it’s not enough. Never enough.
After gruesome hours in the small space, Jaejoong leaves the piece of crap of a sculpture and welcomes his husband at the sound of the front door opening. Yunho walks in with a television set. They don’t own a TV because Yunho can’t watch it and Jaejoong refuses to watch by himself. The tube looks old, small and dusty with a broken antenna.
“Hi, babe. I’m home.” Says Yunho as he places the dusty TV on the dinner table.
“That looks filthy. Did you find it on the streets?” Jaejoong asks with a disgusted look on his face.
“Bought it from a garage sale down the street.”
“Why?” The man stares at his husband in disbelief.
“There’s a program on tonight and I thought we should watch it.”
“But-” he’s about to remind him about his time travelling condition and how the static can affect it prematurely.
“I’m not going to look at it. I just want you to see this.”
“What kind of a TV program is it?”
Yunho flashes him a handsome grin. “It’s a surprise.”
As they sat down for dinner while waiting for the program, they fall into a general conversation which leads to the topic about Jaejoong’s miniscule studio.
“It’s okay. We don’t have the money for a bigger house.” Jaejoong explains. “It doesn’t matter. Maybe I can just make paper art or something… like origami.”
Yunho persists, “But a bigger studio is so much better, right?”
“Yeah, but we can’t live in just a studio now, can we?” Jaejoong retorts with a snort. They get by okay on Yunho’s salary and the interest on his trust fund. To afford a studio or a bigger house, Jaejoong would have to get a job, and then he wouldn’t have any time to spend in the studio.
“Point taken.” Yunho concedes, only to turn towards the flickering television set on the kitchen counter. “Oh, hey it’s on.”
Jaejoong turns and finds himself looking at Seoul Lottery’s logo. “Oh my god, you didn’t-”
Yunho definitely did as he digs in his pants pocket and hands the other man a white piece of paper. “Here’s your lottery ticket.”
“Yunho-this is-you’re insane!”
“Shh, just watch.”
As predicted, the numbers matched on the ticket in Jaejoong’s hand. The host congratulates the winners. They just won millions of cash.
Yunho turns the TV off and grins at his beautiful life partner. “Pretty awesome, right?” his smile dropped a little as he realizes that Jaejoong’s not jumping for joy. “Say, ‘thank you my love for providing the money we need to buy a house.’ That’ll work for me.”
“But… Yunho, this is not real.”
“Of course it is. You can take it to the lottery building and they’ll give you the check.”
“But you cheated.”
“It’s just that I saw it on tomorrow’s newspaper…”
“This is still cheating!” Jaejoong protests vehemently. The thought alone doesn’t sit too well with him.
Yunho makes a dramatic scene of slapping a hand on his face before he grabs the ticket and plans to light it up with fire. Jaejoong jumps forward to save the ticket.
“No!” In a way, Jaejoong hates the fact that he would have to make a decision and that it was Yunho who placed him in this position.
“It doesn’t matter, Jae. We could win the lottery every week for the next year if we felt like it. So if you have a problem with it, it’s no big deal.” Yunho sits next to him, throwing an arm around his shoulders. “Just hold onto that for awhile and think about it, okay?”
Jaejoong lifts his eyes and glares at him, “It’s not fair that you’re leaving me with this huge responsibility.”
The other man shrugs it off casually. “I’m perfectly happy either way. If you think we’re cheating the city of Seoul out of the money they’ve scammed from hard-working people, and then let’s just forget this ever happened. I’m sure we can come up with other ways of getting you a bigger studio.”
And then it dawned on him. Yunho could win the lottery anytime at all, that he has never bothered to do so. That he’s setting aside his desire to live like a normal person so he can give him a studio big enough for him. He’s an ingrate, Jaejoong thinks to himself.
“… Jaejoong-ah?”
“Thank you.” Jaejoong spouts abruptly. “Thank you so much.” He tells his wonderful, self-sacrificing husband as he looks at the other straight in the eye.
Yunho raises an eyebrow at him, “Does that mean we’re going to get the money?”
Jaejoong leans forward and kisses him on the lips. It started chaste before it deepens and leaves them both breathless and yearning. “It means thank you.” He whispers against Yunho’s slick lips.
“You’re welcome.” He stands up and pulls the smaller man with him. “I think we should extend our celebration in the bedroom.”
Jaejoong could only happily oblige as they thump up the stairs. Yunho takes his hand as he looks at him with pure adoration. Together they dance to a soundless tune, shares kisses until they reach the bedroom door.
