[HOW IS BABBY TREE FORMED

This kind of question gets Robert's attention. Because being groomed for an entire lifetime to do a job he doesn't want to do? It makes this kind of question resonate.]

I am a teacher myself. The mathematics teacher. [If you don't already know me from the rumours.]

In my case... I always wanted to teach, to educate the community and foster learning and give back somehow... and I have my research projects on the side... [Because even in an AU, he's still a scientist.]

There are many career paths out there. If you can find something you enjoy doing, and turn it into a career, it hardly even feels like a career at all.

(OOC: Feel free to have Ian know/not know Robert in this AU 8D He might know Robert from the many unpleasant rumours about him, as the weird eccentric heir of the magitechnology corporation who took a teaching job for no reason and is inordinately close to several people :|a)

[HE'S AN ORPHAN SO IT'S A MYSTERY, WOE

But he remembers this guy! He was an okay bro!]

A-ah, a teacher, huh?

[Ian's never gone to school, but he has an added respect for a job like that regardless.]

I guess... I haven't found something I'm good at yet. That I also enjoy doing.

Well, what sort of careers have you already tried, and what do you enjoy doing, even recreationally?

One can always improve one's ability at things... Depending on what it is, I would be happy to help you. [Even if Robert's nervous and uncomfortable around most people, he still feels the urge to offer. Call it his ethics code...]

Uuuuuh... I've tried being a waiter, and then I tried cutting lawns... and I tried cleaning houses, and I've tried repairing people's plumbing or roofs... But I didn't really enjoy any of them. Especially since I was really bad at it.

[Robert has sympathy. It can be very difficult to find a job that's worth doing that is also not something you're terrible at or something you despise.]

Well... do you think that you dislike them because you were poor at them... or do you think, perhaps, that you were poor at them because you dislike them?

Depending on the answer to that question, you might be able to find something you are better at, or enjoy more. Or even both.

Ahaha, I'd have to say I disliked them when I realized I was poor at them.

In that case... I would recommend striking out in an entirely different direction, and seeing what you could do.

Are there things in life that you enjoy doing, or being with, or seeing? I have always enjoyed the exploration of the natural world... while I do my researching as a side job, one could easily make it a career if one wanted.

You seem to be the kind of tenacious person who will try again repeatedly, which is admirable. [Robert isn't, so much. He tends to give up.]

I love nature! Plants and animals and all that fun stuff!! [As long as nothing's trying to eat me.] I've always felt kinda drawn to all of it, really.

In that case, you could become all sorts of things that are related to the study of nature. Anything from a forest ranger - I presume Moro would enjoy the assistance of somebody to help protect the forest - to a fellow biologist. There are also people who are needed to gather resources from the forest, and somebody who loves nature, like yourself, would find ways to do so without harming it.

[He smiles at Ian.] That feeling of being "drawn" to something is what many people would classify as a driving force for ascertaining what career path they truly want to take...

That was how I found the courage to essentially turn my back on what my parents had always taught me to do, at any rate. Of course, I can't entirely walk away from that... there's too much dependence on its output. But at the same time, it isn't a job I particularly relish...

[Ooh, this is helpful...

But wait-]

It isn't? Why's that?

[There's a million reasons but Robert tries to make it concise.]

The most prominent part is that it puts me in the public spotlight far more often than I'd want... Being the child of a wealthy family tends to garner unnecessary attention, especially in a small place like this.

But it's also that my own thoughts never came into play. I was simply... expected to do it, and that was hardly fair. [It's the whole reason I was even adopted at all. Otherwise I'd likely still be in the orphanage...]

Oh... I see...

[a pause]

You never thought about just doing what you wanted to?

[Voice] semper_cogitans April 28 2011, 06:57:24 UTC
I did, eventually. But... well. My family really only even adopted me for the sole purpose of grooming me to do this job.

...

[It's obvious enough who he is, now.]

... The Hastings family isn't known for being particularly accepting to those who don't want to take up the magitechnological reins.

Wha-that's not a very family-way of doing things! They should support you to do whatever you want!

They should, but that has never been how the family works...

... Shrewd, really. Magitechnological work tends to result in... well, sterility. Hence the adoption of myself and my foster brother.

We're, er, rather well-known in the Valley. Not particularly pleasantly at that.

That's too bad... [And yet in this world he doesn't even realize he can't EVEN HAVE CHILDREN WITH SOMEONE. Woe.] But y'know, you should do what you enjoy on the side, at least...
