Dree was standing back from the others as the presentation continued. The hospital was the city's pride and joy and they'd been invited on a grand tour. She didn't want to go, but their hosts were insistent and she couldn't exactly turn them down.

Trey and El'Ari were engrossed in the demonstration of the equipment and didn't notice that she'd been slowing inching to the door. Dree's eyes never left them as she backed up against the door frame and slipped into the hallway.

Letting out a breath, Dree started down the hall; she remembered seeing a large sitting area with lots of windows. After a few feet, Dree realized that she may have remembered a sitting area, but she had no idea where it was. She'd been on Trey and El's six and focused on his shirt as they walked. Spotting a nurse headed her way, Dree raised a hand and pointed down the hall.

"Um, sorry.. water?"

"That way, Miss," the young woman replied with a smile and continued on her way. Dree nodded to her and continued down the hall. After a few minutes, she managed to find a water cooler and had her small paper cup half full when an object appeared in the corner of her eye.

Dree looked up to see a child, probably no more than three, pushing herself up off the floor. "Are you all right?" Dree asked, setting her drink on top of the water cooler and diving toward the girl. The little girl pushed herself up to a sitting position and sighed heavily.

"I fell down," she said in a tiny voice. She looked up at Dree, with big green eyes and a frown. "You're pretty." Dree smiled and ducked her head slightly.

"Thank you. You're very pretty, too," she said, tapping the girl's nose lightly. "Are you hurt?" The girl shook her head and pushed herself up from the floor. Dree smiled as the little girl moved toward her and reached out for her hair.

"It didn't fall out," the girl whispered. Raising her eyes and dropping her hand, the girl looked at Dree and raised her hand to her own head. "Mine fell out." Dree smiled and reached up to the girl's head; she didn't have much hair.

"It does that, sometimes," Dree whispered and winked. "You have very green eyes."

The little girl beamed. "That is why my daddy picked my name." She nodded and stepped back slightly. Holding out a hand, the girl introduced herself. "I am Verdy. Are you sick, too?"

Dree smiled and took Verdy’s hand. "That is a lovely name," she told the girl. "I'm Audree. And, I'm not sick."

"Did your daddy pick that name?" Verdy asked in a whisper. Dree smiled and shook her head.

Another voice got their attention and Dree looked up to see an older girl in the doorway, waving to Verdy. "You're not supposed to be in the hall, Verdy. Come on, it's time for the story." Dree looked from the girl back to her new friend.

"That's Meg. She's bossy," Verdy said with a huff. "You wanna hear the story, Audree? Come on!" Dree's eyes widened as Verdy gripped her hand and pulled her toward the room. Dree moved into the room and saw three other children, all looking a bit worse for wear, but all with wide smiles and bright eyes.

Verdy waved Dree over and patted the floor next to her. "This is Audree, Miss Lira. She's gonna listen to the story, too," Verdy told the nurse pulling a book from the shelf. "And this is Meg and Kenai and David and Rik'ii," Verdy continued, introducing Dree to the three boys and the girl from the doorway. David, the youngest of the bunch, crawled over and looked at Dree with narrowed eyes.

Dree tried not to look like she was bothered, but she wasn't sure what he was looking at. "He likes funny faces," Rik'ii said. Dree nodded and leaned down to David's eye-level then crossed her eyes. David immediately shrieked and clapped his hands.

"All right, settle down," Nurse Lira said and pointed for the kids to gather. David promptly situated himself in Dree's lap and she looked up to the nurse with a mix of surprise and confusion. "You're warm," Lira told her and nodded. Dree looked down and noticed David had almost burrowed into her lap. Smiling, Dree shrugged and closed her arms around him.

"Everyone ready?" Nurse Lira asked. After a chorus of 'yes', she started to read the first page.

By the time the story was over, David was asleep in Dree's lap, Verdy was curled up against her side and Rik'ii and Meg were wrapped up in a blanket. As Nurse Lira read the last few sentences, Dree looked at Meg and Verdy and held a finger to her lips. The girls clapped quietly so that they didn't wake up David. Dree noticed the look on Kenai's face and turned to see Trey and El'Ari in the doorway, watching them.
