[In every life, the sun must set. Kid knew this more than anyone, but it didn't change the fact that it still hurt when he lost someone. It's hard to accept when someone simply disappears.

Still, Mayfield had enough problems right now without Kid adding another pile of worry and depression on the top. Liz always hated when he worked himself into a ( Read more... )

We have much proof that those who "leave" are returned to their proper home.

Forgive me if I seem pessimistic, but from where I come from, hallucinations are rather common.

What proof do we have?

There have been those of us who have been droned for random periods of time, who return from their droning with stories of having been where they belong for either a short, or very long period of time.

Again, I need to ask for your forgiveness, and please, do stop me if I am too forward.

Were you one of these people?

I know I was supposedly here for quite some time - but I have no memories of my visit.

"They go back home, right?"

[There is the slightest hint of desperation in her voice.]

I want to believe that, but...

if it turns out it isn't the case, well.

What I'm saying, rather, is that it might be wise to remain skeptic in this town.

"...What are you saying? That the people who get droned might be..."

[Her voice becomes more wobbly as she speaks, and finally something catches in her throat as she tries to choke back fresh tears.]

[Kid catches himself - the last thing he wants to do is create more drama. He shouldn't worry others. Still, he doesn't sound completely uneffected, either.]

What I'm saying is that we shouldn't believe anything the town gives us completely. It's a philosophical question, nothing set in stone, so please, don't be worried.

Rather, in the event that those who leave aren't actually sent home, well, it's better to not assume, right? If they're somehow still as trapped as the rest of us.

[The reply he receives is curt and to the point.]

Yes, Liz is gone and I'm eating her replacement.

I know.

What.

I should had known better to expect tact and compassion, shouldn't have I?

I'm sorry, what was that?

I have been living off rats and birds since the arrival of my new "mother" four days ago because of my promise to you not to target humans. So don't talk to me about compassion and tact. I deserve this.

[Her words come out as a snarl not-so-thinly laced with bitter resentment.]

I wasn't talking about her.

What does it matter to you what you eat, anyway? It's all part of the food chain to you, isn't it?

Ummm... I think it's like, their minds go home! So these are like extra bodies! A copy or something.

Ahh, Amy. I hope so.

What I don't understand is that I apparently used to be here before, but I don't remember a thing. I would remember months of this, shouldn't I?

And the Westport letters, I...

It's difficult to piece together coherently.

Maybe whoever drones us makes mistakes sometimes! Like, he sneezes, and his magic or technology gets all broken and he messes up bringing you back here.

It's difficult, but not impossible.

It makes it all the more important to figure out, does it not? Understanding seems to be our best bet.

A little comrade of yours has run away into head? Should not worry, if they are not able to be coming back, mind was not strong enough anyway.

That isn't anything of your concern!

Well, yes then. To put it in your terms, I've lost a "comrade," as it may be.

She was one of the strongest people I had ever known.
