Hey hun, not sure if you check your email, but I just found out we lost our family dog, Sarge. I am horrified. Any ideas, I mean being in the Pet buisness. ::Worries::

Wow... I'm SO sorry! It's really hard losing a pet, and there's really not one best way of handling it. Last year I lost a dog that we had for 17 years, and it was heartbreaking. I guess if Sarge was old you can always look at it in the way that he's out of pain now. Dogs suffer in old age, more than we can comprehend, but they just don't show it like we do. I have my puppy's ashes on my fireplace mantle along with a "best friends" poem on a plaque. That was my way of handling it. My grandmother is still bent out of shape about it. One thing your family should NOT do, is rush out to get another dog. That's usually the first and most common thing people do to recover from a dog's death... but it's a huge mistake ( ... )

Well..he isn't dead..I hope. ::cringe:: I meant lost as in..physically lost him. We think he was stolen by a crew that had been in the area. Several dogs have gone up missing. Rumors about some dog fighting ring in Connicut? But who knows. He is a young German Shepard(About 2years)...so my Step father just insists he is off running away with some female lass..but that just isn't like Sarge. He is a protector. He usually sits in one of two places, on the corner of our house, or at the top of the stairs(the only spot in the house where he can see and hear whats going on in the rest of the house). He does rounds every night before bed, going to room to room making sure everyone and everything is Ok. If your sad he would go up to you and poke you with his nose gently, trying to cheer you up. Sweetest dog ever. ::frown ( ... )

Oh sorry... I took "lost" as death. Check the internet for some forums. There may be someone in your area who has a hound that can hunt down other dogs. If Sarge isn't neutered, 2 years old is about the time where if they haven't gotten any, they'll go for miles to get some. Their sense of smell is about 1000x's stronger than ours, so he can smell a female in heat from a LONG distance. If he's neutered, the drive isn't as strong. It's a HUGE reason to get males neutered though, that urge is insatiable.

Good luck, keep me up to date. In the morning, when I have time, I'll see what I can find out. I wouldn't worry about a dog fighting ring if you have a 2 year old shepherd... they use cats as bait, it's "safer" to the dogs that are going after them.
