When I was nine or ten years old and growing up in Aroostook County, Maine, the Potato Capital of the World at the time, schools would close for about three weeks in the fall for the annual potato harvest season ( Read more... )

Ouch!

My mom took us to pick strawberries at a neighboring farm a few times; they sold them, and you could pick your own if you wanted. :)

I had a sore foot for a long time.
Whenever we would go pick berries at a farm, I know we ate more than we put in the baskets to buy. Really got our money's worth!
Thanks for reading!

My mom always ate them, but I've never been a strawberry fan. The boys seemed to like them okay, though.

You're welcome!

When I read the prompt, the rhyme immediately came to mind and I knew just what I needed to write about. That doesn't usually happen for me so it was a fun recall!
Glad you liked it! :)

What a great prompt-opportunity to tell this story!

I was trying to do the mental arithmetic to gauge what era this would have been-- around the early 1950s? $9.00 would have been a fair amount of money then.

Thank goodness there was no pitchfork in that hay, though the results were bad enough!

Oh goodness, that could have been tragic. But the tools were always hung up neatly so we were ( somewhat) safe in playing there. This would have been about 1952-53. You did good math! Being able to earn a couple dollars a day was really good for a kid back then.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Yep. Sore ankle for quite a while that fall.
I love going to get fresh anythings, even just in our own garden. Picking apples is great fun in the fall. I have not done that for a few years but my daughter took the grand kids and even did a photo shoot with them in the trees.
Thanks for reading! :)

Oh man, having to give up working when you've just discovered the joy of getting paid, that sucks! My first job was vastly less glamorous, I worked at a mall Limited Too, and was so blown away to be handed a check for $200 and it was ALL MINE, BWAHAHAHAHA!!! I blew it on cds and one of those manicure kits they sell at the mall kiosks. Those were the days.

My first real job was clerking at a Woolworth store. Not sure they are even in existence anymore!
