I've mentioned in the past that one of the unique beliefs I hold, as a Mormon, is that we have both a Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother. Sometimes, within the church, there is a sort of hush-hush attitude towards Heavenly Mother, like a "sacred silence." Recently, a scholar at BYU undertook to gather all mentions of her within church doctrine ( Read more... )

I actually bought the LDS Women's Treasury and when flipping through it there's a whole section of quotes on HM from GAs. I was pleasantly surprised!

I'm going to have to read that. I don't think I've heard you mention a Heavenly Mother.

My belief is that God is asexual, a being we can't genderize; but I'm interested in reading what the article says. I mean, hey, the Catholics value Mary, mother of Jesus with such high regard.

My pastor - Lutheran pastor - was talking to me about different beliefs and faiths. I love how open she is to the idea that our Christian beliefs may actually be simulated in other faiths like Islam or Buddhism. She explains it much, much better than I do - being a theologian and all. But I liked that she was interested to compare all the religions and finding the comparisons in them.

Well, we don't believe she is part of the Godhead or Trinity. But we do believe that she's an important part of our creation. One of the main premises of the LDS church is that the family is the building block of eternity, that family is crucial to His plan. Thus the emphasis on motherhood, bearing children, etc. So, if that is the case, if we truly believe that family is critical to salvation, wouldn't it also make sense that we'd believe God has a wife, and we have a Heavenly Mother?

I agree with your pastor. It is fascinating to see how much religions across the world have in common. I remember when I took a religion class in college, I thought the same thing. There are certain elements that just seem universal.

The image at the beginning of the article was amazing. Very haunting and beautiful.

I think the LDS idea of Heavenly Mother is so similar to the Catholic Mary (to a degree, of course). I'm trying to remember how a Catholic friend of mine explained Mary's role in her faith: she said that praying to Mary as an intercessory (am I using that term right) was like a bonus - that Mary would talk to Jesus, her son, on our behalf. I thought that was pretty interesting.

I will have to read that when i don't feel like i'm rushing.

Like you I've always admired her and often wonder what we don't know about her.

My sister had an experience as a child. This woman always came to her I think in her dreams, and she was always wearing white.(hense why we called her the lady in white." My mom, sister's and I like to think that maybe she is heavenly mother. she could also be an ancestor. I guess my niece( my sister's oldest daughter) has claimed to see her as well and told her thinks that My sister didn't tell her.
