The recovery disk won't save your data; it's just something to boot your computer up with.
To back up everything, you should get a Windows boot CD -- the install CD probably can do it -- or get a Linux LiveCD, so it'll run everything off the disk instead of your screwed-up Windows on the hard drive. Then, you can plug in a flash drive or maybe connect to the web and backup all your personal data.
After you back up everything (don't forget saved emails and bookmarks!), then wiping and reinstalling sounds like the least painless. It only takes about 3 hours -- 2 hours to install Windows (a lot of sitting around reading a book and keeping an eye on when to push "go") and another to download new drivers, put software back on, and put your personal data back on.
If you have the disks and stuff, I could help you out with that this Saturday -- I probably have guard rehearsal in the morning, which means my tentative day-trip isn't happening =\
