Emetophobia

Jan 02, 2008 21:32

I've just started reading Dawn of The Dumb by the fantastically bitter, twisted and witty Charlie Brooker. I was interested to read that he is emetophobic. I have an almost perverse fascination with the psychological frailties of people for whom I have a lot of admiration. I suppose it's as simple as feeling mildly reassured that people can have ( Read more... )

I ordered that book via Amazon a couple of days back. I do like his verbal style, so I'm hoping I take to his written word too.

Glad you are improving. Go away vile stomach bug!

Thanks! :)

I'm really enjoying the book so far. I almost always read his columns in The Guardian and his telly show is great, too.

You look fit in that icon, BTW!

It's your expression that really makes that photo, though.

I've been uploading user-pics! I <3 my Christmas present! :)

Wow, I really didn't know Charlie Brooker was emtetophobic!! That just brightened up my horribly disasterous evening!! I'm not sure why it did but, yeah..lol!

Hope you're feeling better.

I guess I'm emetophobic then, although I have serious doubts as to whether it's a genuine phobia. Phobias by their very nature are irrational fears, but I don't see anything irrational about a fear of vomiting! It's painful, unpleasant and generally tends to mean you're not very well so it seems perfectly rational to me to fear it! x

Nah, you're not. Neither am I. Most people feel the way you and I do about vomiting, in the same way that most people are a bit freaked out by spiders, but that doesn't make the majority of people arachnophobic or emetophobic. True emetophobia is an awful illness that dramatically effects a sufferer's everyday functioning. My best friend is severely emetophobic and I hate what she has to go through every day. If you've got time, read the user-info from emetophobia.

You can’t take a job, or go to college, you can’t go shopping or travel, through fear of seeing, smelling, hearing something you don’t want to. You miss out on so much of life, because you limit yourself to invisible boundaries, to keep yourself safe from the risks that may cause you to vomit, such as, smells that make you feel sick, things you see, things you hear, situations that make you feel uncomfortable, etc.On an entirely unrelated and far nicer topic, I'm going to read your Finland blog tomorrow and be immensely jealous... And maybe want to attack you with a motorbike made ( ... )

Ah, thanks for clearing that up...I haven't got emetophobia then, thank goodness!

I would highly recommend Finland to anyone, I really cannot wait to go back...I miss it already :( xx

Yeah, a friend's ex-girlfriend was emetophobic. It completely ruled a lot of aspects of their relationship. Socially it was a nightmare, as she was terrified of people drinking alcohol, due to the potential for consequences. The list of foods was really difficult for her to remain healthy on too. It really is a horrible thing, and can make life so difficult.
