Penny Candy

A few weeks ago I bought something I haven't bought in years. Penny candy used to be available in a big bin at the local 5 and 10, or the 7 Eleven by the house I grew up in. Yes - certain scents/smells can send me back to very specific moments in the past. I find that the emotional response is very powerful, and it can almost cause a disassociation with reality - blanking out to the point where the only thing on my mind is that moment from the past. I can recall what people were wearing/saying.

The smell of Honeysuckle vines take me back to when I used to visit my grandmother as a child.

Sometimes music has this effect on me - heh, many good songs were ruined for me because of bad relationships.

The Hilltop Market in Grantsville, Maryland (about an hour or so from Morgantown) has a big section where you can fill bags with all kinds of candy (including orange slices). It always makes me nostalgic!

For me it works both ways- some scents bring back strong memories, while some memories come along with not only images and sounds, but scents.

Thanks, for the responses. It's amaxing to me how intense the feeling can be. When it happens to me, it usually stops me dead in my tracks.
