I rose in the wee hours of morning to drive an hour plus from my hotel and see the sun rise at Joshua Tree.  Why?  I don't know.  I've never before been there and it seemed I should go.  As I drove past the closed kiosk at the entrance, windows down, sunroof open, a colorful cricket like creature jumped through my window onto my head.  As if

Wow. I really need to get out more. NEED to. October is full of Jewish holidays so maybe I'll see if Adam wouldn't mind taking a wee trip to Yosemite of something for a hike. Hell, he could stay in the car and draw!

Your spontaneous side trip sounds incredible.

Also, hiking alone isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just as long as some one knew where you were going and when to expect you back.
