I thought Akise was pretty damn flat as a character. I know people love him, but for me he was too bland to be interesting.

Thanks for commenting, anon.

What can I say? Maybe the rest of the cast was so bland it lowered my standards. I could tell that Akise was conflicted and had to struggle to survive (whereas Yuno was pretty much unbeatable in a fight), and he grew more bitter over time when Yukiteru started going crazy.

If not interesting, then at least he was three-dimensional. At this point in the story I couldn't ask for much more.

Late as hell comment, but thanks for the review. It's shit like this I look for when I'm trying to decide what to watch next and, honestly, for all the hype surrounding it it doesn't seem worth it. I cant stand anything that's fueled by fanservice and 1 character while the rest diddle around in their underwear because /who does that/.

I feel that when someone ends up sitting down and trying to make a story they forget that their characters are supposed to be believable as characters or humans. In forgetting that, they often just poop out shitty plot twists that get certain "essential" characters out of things (read essential as the characters pulling in viewers), or cant think of anything useful to advance character development or story so they dedicate an entire episode to bath scenes.

If you have any other recommendations I'd have open ears.

Hello anon, thanks for the comment! It doesn't matter if it's "late," it's still appreciated. ^^

Everyone is entitled to their own tastes and opinions, but yes, Future Diary is pretty bad: it can never make up its mind whether it's trying to be serious or humorous and ultimately fails in both aspects. As you said, relatable characters play a major role in pulling in viewers, but all Future Diary does is waste potential. I was only covering the manga here, but from the looks of things, the anime isn't much better. You can check JesuOtaku's review if you want to know more about the anime.

As for recommendations, I don't know what kind of things you're looking for, but I would be happy to share.

If you're interested in "deadly game" scenarios like Future Diary's, aside from the video game The World Ends With You and the anime Mai HiME mentioned above, I recently discovered the anime Dangan Ronpa, which I really enjoyed. (Incidentally, it was adapted from a video game.) It tells the story of a group of teenagers trapped in a school by ( ... )
