if finding a somewhere to live in london is so difficult, the demand must be really high; maybe there's someone out there who would be able to take over your rent for a couple of months on contract [perhaps while he/she is looking for a more permanent place]? if that's cool with your flatmates and landlord, you move back to manchester, wait on the job, and if you get it you've still got your place in london.

just a thought. i know a lot of people here who do this when they go on trips for a few months and still want to keep their apartments for when they get back.

Yup, there's a reason it's listed as one of the most expensive cities in the world. This is on the cheaper side of things too.
