Title: I Could Have Met You In A Sandbox
Author: naiveprophet
'Verse: The Effect
Rating: slash - soft
Pairing: Graham/Elijah (original)
Author’s Note: I couldn’t help myself. The lemonade prompt for windles_orbit made me think of little kids with their lemonade stands, and… Well. This was the result. I think it’s adorable. The title comes from the John Mayer song “Love Song for No One.” It's complete mush, but still adorable.
Graham Weidner was created by me. Elijah Carmichael was created by guiltycross. Just borrowing him for fluff that she'll despise. Baha.
It's not really quite The Effect universe, it's kind of an offshoot miniature pocket AU of The Effect. And that was a lot of adjectives.

Graham stood on the little wooden stool his aunt let him use when he decided to make something, as he couldn’t quite reach the counter effectively otherwise. Usually it was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But today, in this achingly hot August weather, it was lemonade.

He lifted the spoon up to his lips and sipped, followed by a wrinkle of his nose. Too sour. He carefully measured out more sugar with his aunt’s measuring cups--no idea how much to add, but as he saw her using them when she baked, he thought it was a must.

The next batch was far too sweet. He choked and spluttered, and washed it down with a glass of plain water. Then he studied the back of the box. It showed him little pictures of what to add, and how much. Carefully following the directions, he tried once more.

Perfect.

He grabbed a handful of ice and plopped the cubes into the pitcher happily before taking it outside the apartment building. He had set up a table and chair there, with a colorful sign that read “Free Lemonade!” in crayola. He’d spelled it off the box, and was quite proud of his handiwork.

Then he began offering it out to the passersby. They would take one look at his sweet, smiling face, and take up a glass. Most tried to pay him, but he politely declined. After awhile, he went back inside to make a new pitcher, and returned in ten minute’s time, with fresh glasses as well.

A boy came down the sidewalk on a bicycle. He slowed down as he passed the lemonade stand, looking curiously at Graham before coming to a halt.

“Would you like some lemonade?” Graham asked him.

The boy was pretty, almost girlish, with wavy blonde hair and effeminate eyes. He tilted his head to the side. “It’s free?” He had the vaguest hint of an accent, but then, so did Graham.

“Yep!” He poured him a glass and held it out. The boy carefully accepted it.

“Thank you very much.” He drank it slowly, watching Graham out of the corner of his eye. “It’s very good. Did you make it?”

“Yes, I did. All by myself,” Graham said proudly. “I’m glad that you like it,” he added shyly.

The boy finished his glass and set it down. “I think I should pay you,” he announced.

“No, it’s free,” Graham protested.

But the boy leaned in and quickly darted a kiss to his lips. Then he was on his bike again, pedaling away. Graham pressed his hand to his mouth in surprise, tasting the sugary refreshment that had lingered on the other boy’s lips. A blush quickly rose to his cheeks. Lemonade would never be the same for him again.

“Graham?” Elijah called from the kitchen. “Do you want something to drink?” The slender blonde stood in front of the refrigerator, allowing the cool air to refresh him from the heat of the apartment.

Graham moved into the kitchen, peering into the fridge from behind him. “Yes, I think so. What do you have?”

“Water. Iced tea. I could make some lemonade.”

The dark-haired male giggled softly. Elijah looked at him in surprise. “What is it?”

“It’s nothing, it’s silly.”

With a smile, Elijah pulled the lemonade out. “Tell me while I make it.”

Graham moved to the cupboard to get the sugar out. “Well, when I was little… Maybe six or seven, I made lemonade one day, for a lemonade stand.”

His friend grinned at him. “You had a lemonade stand? That’s so cute.” He tore open a packet and poured the yellow crystals into a pitcher, running it under the faucet.

“Yes, well..” He blushed. “I didn’t charge anyone. It was hot, and I just thought people might like some lemonade. And at one point… Oh, it’s too silly.” He blushed.

Elijah took the sugar Graham had been measuring out, pouring it in and stirring. “Oh come on, you can’t stop now.”

“Well, this boy stopped. And I gave him some lemonade. And… he kissed me. Out of the blue.” Graham laughed nervously and twisted his hands. “It sounds stupid, but I had a crush on him forever. Even though I never saw him again.” He realized Elijah was staring at him, and bit his lip. “I told you it was silly.”

“No, Graham, I--” Elijah paused, running his hand through his hair. He laughed. “When I was little… six or seven….. I passed a little boy with a lemonade stand, and he gave me a glass of lemonade. I gave him a kiss as a thank you.”

Lemonade was never the same after that.
