Ducky decided it had been easier to train Mr. Palmer to his way of working, than it was to train himself how to live each day without Jethro.

It was the smaller things that in many ways were the hardest; the lack of the scent of coffee, sawdust and the old-fashioned after-shave Jethro had used for as long as Ducky had known him. There was no one to cook for, no one to snap 'Ducky' at him in the way only Jethro could do. Every time the doors to Autopsy opened, Ducky would still look up, would still be expecting Jethro to stride in.

He had tried so very hard to accept Jethro's decision to leave him, leave NCIS, leave DC, leave for all intents and purposes the country.

After almost three decades of friendship and love, how did one train oneself to let go, to move on, to forget, to accept?

Ducky made a decision. He wasn't going to simply accept Jethro's decision to leave, to be free, to get away from everyone who loved him, cared for him, liked him. He should have been more forceful, more determined at the time. He should have stood up to Jethro, should have put his case forward, should have reminded Jethro how much he loved him, reminded him that Jethro had promised only death would separate them.

Decision made, Ducky made plans for his journey to where Jethro now called home. As he worked out his plans, words from a song he remembered from his past came back to him.

Oh trains and boats and planes took you away
But every time I see them I pray
And if my prayer can cross the sea
The trains and the boats and planes
Will bring back you back, back home to me.
