Ethical Question

Apr 06, 2008 22:02

If you see someone on the internet say they're going to commit suicide, do you have an ethical responsibility to try to stop them? Suppose:

1. They've said their name and the city that they live in.
2. They sound calm and reasonable.
3. You don't know whether any of it is true (it's the internet).

annnd go!

It's a trap, do NOT click the link!

More seriously, I don't think the average reasonable person would be moved to act on the information given in this scenario. And besides that, some people/cultures don't necessarily shun suicide.

Change a few things around to something like - it's your best friend, who sent you a message on myspace, who has been acting strange. Then ya, maybe there's a call to action there.
