So interesting, the Spike, Angel intercation and now Mike truly in the mix. Buffy asked anxiously, “Should we move him? Won’t we…hurt him?” Definitely get the speech, Buffy is concerned becuse the crisis under her nose affects Dawn and Spike, just "anxiously"... right vibe?? Nit-picking, I know:) Jane
Maybe she's anxious about all that blood anyplace other than the grass. I'll think about it. After all, Buffy isn't altogether heartless. She's always dealing with problems that aren't hers, however unwillingly and gracelessly. Yet I admit I boggled a bit over that word too but couldn't come up with anything better. Maybe after I let it set a few more hours, something more neutral, less involved, will come to me. Thanks, as always, for your helpful comments.
Buffy's forehead creased.... Yes, that vibe, perfect, she is concerned, sorting out a problem concerned, thinking what to do for the best concerned. Jane:)
I'm extremely interested, now, in Angel, and all of his motivations, even the subconscious ones, in this story. And I feel a lot happier after you set me straight about it being Spike's (and Dawn's, and Buffy's) POV about Angel. Angel is, of course, all about family; and it's interesting that even he says that Spike was "his". Which, to me, goes a long way in explaining why Angel insisted on the Supplice in the prior story, even though Angel was all ensoulled. It had nothing to do with good or bad, but with ownership, passion, power and jealousy.
And in return, here we are, one more generation of Aurelians; instead of Angelus and Dru and Will, it's Angel and Spike and Michael. With Spike still in obedience to Angel, and Michael, reluctantly but still in obedience to Spike. Which reminds me, I like the note of almost-pride in Spike's speech with Dawn, about how Mike went straight at Fudo.
I would love to see more of the glimmer of humor that Dawn elicited from Angel, too.
It is not good, it is not calming, it is not fair for such a celebate type as myself to read your Spike/Buffy scenes. So, he didn't want Buffy's blood to be passed on to Mike in any form, huh?
Damn. I'm too inarticulate right now to adequately express my admiration for this latest installment. I couldn't believe that you had Mike cloven in two (is cloven a word?). It was all the more real for the lack of dramatic build up - it all happened so fast. Buffy's anxiety felt natural to me - I took it as coming from her concern for how Mike's condition would impact Spike and Dawn as well as the whole Sunnydale vampire power structure. Mike getting dusted would not only grieve her loved ones but would create a whole lot of problems for the Master Vamp of Sunnydale, I should think. And just when she had Spike home most nights
( ... )
There is so much goodness in this part that I hardly know where to begin. Interesting for Dawn to make the comparisons between her Aurelian vampires, too, noting that Mike and Angel are the broadswords to Spike's rapier. Noting that she never knew a doting father---not even the Monkish Memories included Hank Summers as anything but a git, apparently! Noting the comparisons between Angel and Mike.
And smell, smell, smell----Dawn smells different to Spike than Buffy does; Mike likes Dawn's smell; Angel treasures the sense memory of Connor's smell. Which makes me wonder about Spike and Michael's reactions to Connor's smell----will he be family to them, too? (Here's hoping he isn't grown in this universe)
And, of course, Dawn talking about sex to first Angel, and Spike. I can see how the phrase Victorian gentleman did all sorts of pinging in Angel's head.
Is Angel beginning to come across a little more sympathetically here? Dawn, after all, is somebody he can actually *talk* to: he has no issues with Dawn. And all it takes it a push, and he's rolling! Angel would talk to a tree, if the tree gave him an opening about Connor, the way Dawn does.
He may be a lout (as Spike is a brat) but he's our lout, and I've always had a warm, if impatient, feeling for him.
Absolutely, Angel comes across 100% better. You realize, of course, that I, lost in doting fondness, don't think of him as a lout (and my five sets of DVDs back me up) but rather as a blunt instrument. Here, I think of him as one of those big guys, who conceals his nervy and almost uncontrollable emotional responses to others behind a solid front of domineering strength. (Sorta like a lot of southern men. Huh.)
And, too, the same thing that attracts Michael to Dawn (even her smell) would, insensibly, attract Angel to her and make him feel comfortable, all in spite of himself.
It's not too long, in your time-line, that he was there, of course, and Dawn had "set herself the task" of teasing him. Which Angel would have secretly adored, of course, had he not been still in misery over Connor and busily showing his ass side regarding Spike.
(By the way, Cyn sent me the original of this icon. A Cyn original!)
Re the icon, I've noticed it before, and it's VERY handsome! Congratulations to you, for having/displaying it, and to Cyn, for creating it!
I guess I share your estimate of Angel. It's just not the type of guy I find especially endearing...even the Southern Gentleman version. I hope I can do him something approaching justice, though.

That weird little chuckle, though...

And control, obedience, leading (perhaps) to reliance, trust. Yup. All of the above.

I don't particularly like stories that obsess about "plumbing," but I know which Tab A goes into Slot B. Continent, not ignorant, in other words....

Good lord, now I want to write Angel and Dawn.
