I'm with Julia; these characters, with their unique Nan-history, are so real to me that I don't even have to go back and re-read the previous chapter(s) to put myself back in the story. (Although I always end up doing so after reading it, because the actual reading is always even better than my memory of that experience tells me it is. Incoherent praise, but sincere!) Thanks so much for the update.
I'm glad you and Julia were able to pick up the thread of the narrative easily. Bad enough to be reading something in draft rather than already complete--to let a month's silence intervene must be much worse! I don't remember ever halting for so long on a WIP. Hope I never have to again!
Pardon me if I'm breaking every LJ etiquette rule by doing this, but I've written a little ficlet (Curiosity)in which Angel sees Buffy give the amulet to Spike. Again, I apologize to Nan if this sort of shameless self-promotion is just not done, declasse or otherwise socially unacceptable. I just thought you might enjoy my take on that scenario, and I wasn't sure how else to reach you (I'm a LJ newbie).

No matter how long it's been since you've updated, I find myself sliding back into the story as if it were no time at all.
Poor Spike, though, trying to do the write thing and just making a stink.
Julia, not sufficiently intelligent right now to write a better comment

This is my third try at starting the new chapter--the others were all thoughty and interior. I like the house nearly blowing up better!
