I am sorry to hear about your friend's passing on...especially when it could have been different or possibly avoided. Reading, reading...I just finished a book titled Emma & Me and thought of your Emma. I was wondering if this was a coincidence? Glad to see your post. xo
Thanks. You know, I think I read that book awhile back, if it's the same one. If it's about a woman in the U. K. who gets a guide dog named Emma. Smile. I think they made a TV movie of the story, starring Elizabeth Mongomery. She had to learn to use a cane for the movie, and act as though blind. I think it was filmed partly at a dog guide school, perhaps Guiding Eyes in New York. I thought of that book when they gave me my dog Emma, wondering if she were named for the Emma dog in the book. Was that the same one you read? I think in the book or on TV, the author gets her sight back and has to give up the dog. By the way, my Emma is still fabulous, healthy and happy as ever, approaching her tenth birthday this Christmas. It's great to be back on LJ again and to hear from you. Smile.
That would be the book I was referring to, yes. In the book, she does have an operation and her sight (I forget what per cent) is restored and she keeps Emma as Emma is around the age of retirement. I loved that book and I would like to see the movie as well. Your Emma is absolutely darling, you're quite correct! xo
Yes, now I remember. In the book, she keeps Emma. In the movie, to make it more dramatic, she gives Emma up after she regains her sight. Her choice is to have Emma given to someone who is blind, who would need her. Highly unrealistic if not unusual, because after having Emma that long, even if she chose not to keep her, the dog wouldn't be retrained for someone else, after Emma has been abandoned. But the movie was adapted from that book. The story is much better as a book, but you should see the movie, because Elizabeth Montgomery is good in it. Also, the movies must have come out in the 90's, and I bet my Emma was named for that dog. My first Leader dog, Kelly, was named for a dog guide in a Dizney TV movie about a dog guide named Kelly. It was called, ATTa Girl, Kelly. I remember reading the book, Emma and Me, long before my Emma was given to me, and enjoying it very much, never dreaming I'd have a dog named Emma. I'll have to reread the book now.
