For a change of pace after Last House on the Left I turned east for my next movie. Far East. The 2003 South Korean picture A Tale of Two Sisters, written and directed by Ji-Woon Kim. The “Yattering and Jack” has always been my favorite of Clive Barker’s tales. The bureaucratic mediocrity of the demon world slamming into the mediocrity of the “real” world leads to hilarity. Stephen King’s Cycle of the Werewolf has always held a special place in my heart, I think because I was so young when I first read it and saw those glorious pictures. There was a lot to like about Sarah Pinborough’s Breeding Ground. I thought the idea of something targeting women, growing in their bodies and making them fat before it killed them was deliciously horrifying. Matheson’s The Funeral is a bit of a departure from any other Matheson I’ve read. Usually he affects a simple style, tells it like it is. For this darkly satirical piece, he adopts a purple, almost Lovecraftian style. This story is a neat little treat…a tour de force of all the classic monsters.
