Good Parenting - Beach Edition

May 05, 2010 23:10

I've been going to the beach lately for some exercise, and I keep seeing kids doing the exact same things I used to do when I was their age. And then it occurred to me that I don't really understand why children even like to go to the beach.

Think about it: Unless the ocean is completely waveless, you can't go in the water alone. All you can do is ( Read more... )

think of the children!

You have awesome beach parenting. \o/ I, of course, cannot relate to any of this, due to 1) near-drowning trauma at 5 and 2) growing up where it was illegal to go into the water at the beach because you would freeze to death and the Japanese govt was sick of fishing stupid people's hypothermic bodies out. Or sth. :-P I was an ocean virgin until your aquatic mammal self took me into the ocean, and yes, I'm only going into the Mediterranean because you want me to.

I do remember my class took a field trip to the beach once, and I collected eleventy million seashells, and I came home happy because I had no intention of doing anything with them. Two years later, I was also the kid who collected the most bags of leaves, fern, moss, etc. on the hiking trip ( ... )

IT'S THE MEDITERRANEAN. YOU MUST. (Plus you get to add one more thing to your map, remember.)

LOL, moss. Geeeeeeeeeeeeek.

Haha, yes, that's kids for ya. Unless you're a crazy angsty kid like I was. :-P

My mom was a good beach parent, too. My dad can spend a whole week "at the beach" and not touch sand once. But my mom likes to swim, and raft, and she also builds awesome sand'y things so you don't feel like you wasted your time on crappy sand things.

So I have to say my beach memories are not the ones you describe here. :)

Good, good. I think ppl here see the beach as weekend relaxation, so nagging kids sort of get in the way. But eh, most people aren't awesome parents like us. ;)

I laughed so hard with this XD
My mother... is one of those, but my grandma on the other hand, who would almost always come to the beach with us, was an amazing beach-parent, we spent all our time in the water and she taught me when to skip and how to avoid being rolled. She also always would play with me, always... aw. Gran ;__;

Everybody in my family was like this, and I remember thinking exactly that, 'why would anyone want to sit around when there's ~water~ right there? What's the point of going to the beach, then?' Lol, so annoying.

And it's funny because I still feel that way, I go to the beach to go in the water.

But were there big waves breaking near the shore? Where I grew up, the beaches were pretty dangerous for a small child to go in alone, they could easily be dragged in. Except on those rare days when the ocean somehow decided it would be waveless (I don't know the mechanism behind that).

I remember the waves as being pretty big sometimes, but I could keep my balance.
