Remember in one of those Narnia books where CS points out that wretched, unimaginative, self-centered Eustace had read all the wrong sorts of books and was therefore ill equipped for life in Narnia? I always felt smug that I had read the RIGHT sort of books. So here's where this gets me ( Read more... )

Speaking of hangovers, Corey was impressed by the wisdom of your term "hangover horn".

Well, I'm pretty much with you on both lists. In fact, I think I'm pretty well armed for the z-apocalypse. Yeah, go me.

Heh. I figured you would be right there with me; you have such a big imagination! So what were some of those defining books you read when everybody else was reading dull, unimaginative stuff like Little House on the Prairie?

So what do you mean by being armed for z-day? Actual armaments? A careful study of the Zombie Survival guide? A bug-out plan? Do tell!

Well, I figure I've read about them, written about them, watched them (all kinds) on TV. I have the Zombie Survival Guide and some other books. We have weapons and ammo (could always use more of that). Have common sense, and a second floor that could be blocked off (although we're screwed if they can climb). If they can't climb, we could actually keep them off the property; if they get on, there's too many windows so it's the second floor for us. Food would become an issue, water might be okay, depending. Like you said, if they run fast, we're hosed. We're also hosed if they turn out to be like the creatures in the Will Smith version of "I Am Legend," i.e., climbing AND tearing through roofs, because zombies are not affected by the sun. So.

I think my career in the historical field might be a direct result of my obsession with children's books set during WWII. Goodnight Mr Tom, Sally and Rebecca and a whole host of others.

I also read a heap of time travel and witch-craft novels as a kid. Always useful for an historian right?

Interesting thought that the books we had laying around as children would have such an impact as future career choice. You must have read some good ones. I don't think I ever read either of those two you mentioned. Maybe I should pick those up.

Makes me wonder if I should stock up on science and maths books for the girls and see if they'll take the bait.

I think Sally and Rebecca is Australian but you shouldn't have any trouble getting hold of Goodnight Mr Tom. There's a whole genre of stories about kids getting evacuated and having adventures during WWII. I'm not sure why they appealed to me so much but I read a lot of them when I was quite young.

If you're looking for something different in the way of science or maths for kids I hear The Number Devil is good: http://www.amazon.com/Number-Devil-Mathematical-Adventure/dp/0805062998
It's a novel about maths, but apparently that's fun.
