My son is 3.5 and we moved here just last November. We kind of live smack dab in the middle of everything. We found our place online thru rent.com and it went really well. I love our little house. You can look through the newspaper online as well. Hope that helps. No where I have seen is really bad. Good luck and welcome =)

Don't bother with Norfolk and don't live in Portsmouth or Suffolk or on the peninsula unless your hubby loves to sit in traffic for hours a day.

Have you tried http://www.lincolnmilitary.com/installations/naval-station-norfolk/ I think it shows the different communities of housing in the area (we've never tried to live in housing though except in Lemoore CA, but we changed our minds).

i looked at housing, but i know there's a waiting list. i'm hoping we can get in (we're applying anyway), but chances are, as an E3, not on EFMP, and just 1 kid, we'll most likely have to live in town :(

Where are you in Indy? (I'm originally from there!) I would recommend trying to find houses to rent out here. There are many available, unless you want housing and can get in.

You have to be really careful in Norfolk. It's really spotty. A super nice neighborhood can be ghetto the next street over. I don't recommend signing any lease in Norfolk without seeing it in person first.

I would live in either VA Beach or Chesapeake. BAH is plenty to get a decent place out in town in a nice neighborhood in both VA Beach and Chesapeake.

here in whidbey if there is no housing sometimes they will put you up in the navy lodge. Is that a possibility there? i'd check until you can find something that you feel comfortable with.
