I had a co-worker tell me that he used to be an avid reader, but doesn't read any longer.  He said he learned too much and got disturbed.  Three months ago, I thought he was nuts ( Read more... )

I feel your pain! I remedy this mostly by avoiding society as a whole. This might not work as well once I leave college....

Intellectuals tend to get labeled as snobs. I can kind of see why. When you start to know a lot about topics, it's really hard to deal with people whose knowledge is shallow, and thus you avoid people completely. And now I sound judgmental. :)

Sometimes, you can educate, or at least make people think twice about what they've accepted blindly. Of course, sometimes you can't. ;)

I vote for balance between fiction and nonfiction. I definitely don't read enough of the latter. But good fiction can educate us in its own way, through vicarious experience and critical thinking. (Which may be what you meant by killing brain cells "intelligently"? ;)
