I finally broke down and bought the new grinder. Bigger, faster, stronger. It's bargain-basement entry-level for a professional-grade knife-maker's belt grinder, the Grizzly G1015. A quickie collaboration project between a pair of bladesmiths, made in anticipation of our upcoming sword workshop. A sen is a Japanese drawknife, made for use on steel, used to establish flats on long blades such as swords. It's intended for use after forging, and after knocking down the scale with rough stones. This one is a 15th c. knife. The blade is 1:1 with the original, although I substituted a 14th c. style handle for the original (which I couldn't stomach). It'll be the prize knife for my annual brewing competition at the Lilies War in a week.

I don't think people quite realized the sort of junker knives to which I referred, so here's some examples. A quick snapshot in the shop. The lower three are typical junkers. The top one is actually fairly nice, if a bit plain, and is provided as a basis for comparison.

I think I'm instituting a new rule. I have a reading addiction - in my circle of friends that's more a membership requirement than a distinction. I typically keep handy a bunch of books which I've already read to death, because that makes it easier to put them down when time demands.
