I watched the first season of Dexter and wondered what they'd do after that. The first season already had some significant divergences from the book, making major changes to several characters and changing the ending. And it was rather doubtful that the series would pay anything more than lip service to the weirder wilder leanings of the later books. I mean, I really doubted they'd do something like bring in Moloch.

Sounds like they really did just go their own way. Even the first season seemed more like they only wanted the basic characters and the general premise anyway.

(Heck, the first season even messed up the personalities of the kids, which seems like it would have some form of impact if they had gone the Dex&Deb Jr route with them the way the books did.)

From what I've read, only the first season drew from the books. I read a few synopses of the later books on wiki, and I think I like that the series remained relatively grounded. The books any good?

The books don't remain relatively grounded. The first book has the mental connection between Dexter and his brother, which was cut from the TV series. The second just gets a bit weird. And after that... Well, they bring in the god Moloch ( ... )

I think we'll start seeing more ghosts entering Dexter's psyche. One of the big character development points in this season was his multiple personalities vying for supremacy. Rita would become the second ghost talking it out in Dexter's head next to Harry. Kill one more piece of his personality and we've got a recipe for a fantastic inner conflict that may exhibit with an external psychotic disorder. Not to mention, once the flood gates open, we have the opportunity for all kinds of ghosts coming back to torment him...

Oh wait. I'm thinking of 6 Feet Under. Sorry, wrong Michal C. Hall show.
