F@#% ActiveX Control

Nov 23, 2006 00:12

Damn you Microsoft!!! Thank to ActiveX control, some rogue programs have forced its way into my computer right in front of my very eyes. All it took is just one Pop-under to start all the suffering. I think it is called xload.exe. You know what, I surfed the net very carefully and have my security setting high, and I am still getting this crap... ( Read more... )

*hug* ... it's good to hear at least now you are starting to locate the offending items, but I'm still sorry to hear of the woes... -_-
Did you get your backups done?
Remember...

- Have GoBack handy for the moment it comes clean
- use HiJackThis and msconfig and regedit to locate the offenders, and StartupMonitor to block future intrusions
- get the AVG anti-virus from Grisoft.com
- use AdAware by Lavasoft
- turn on Windows firewall

- and have a good Thanksgiving ^V^ *wags feathers*... keep me posted, and see ya sometime soon!

Thanks, C Eagle. I am still trying to work on the data backup, but get sick physically the past few days. Must be because I am worrying too much about my computer. You know what, the Pop-up that started everything may be from an company called Zedo.com. Ever heard of this Zedo company?

Do You think it will be much safer for me to just reinstall my PC, or I should still go check and see how bad the damage are on my pc, and see if it is salvageable without reinstall?

Thanks, hope you too have a great Thanksgiving, and sorry to hear about your tooth. Hope you have cheer up some what over the weekend. *hugs*

*hugs back, hoping you feel better soon..*

If you do just reinstall.. at least you will be 99% suer you are rid of it.. probably 100% actually.

But if you go that route, just make sure ya get everything off of it, and do a virus scan of the backup disk before do the reinstall, or ever use the backup disk anywhere else.

Thanks! I am feeling a lot better by now already. :)

99% if reinstall... do you mean the 1% possibility of BIOS infection? or there are any other possibilities of that 1%?

That is also what I have been worry about, even if most of my backup are pics, but if I do have infection on my backup, not likely, but... am I screwed or I am still able to salvaged the data on my backup disk? or I am better off to get rid of whatever I have in my computer first before backup?

Thanks for pointing out of the FireFox, do you know any good and safe scan software I can use to check on my back-up data? It was the pop-up that have the embedded ActiveX, I found out that Pop-up may belong to some company called Zedo. My security settings are on median-high, which warn me if there is any software wants to get into my computer, and I have the control on the yes and no. Yet, this piece of work still force itself into my computer while all of the warning going off. I am just wondering, this can't be just happending to me, if it is the work of this Zedo company, why is it still in business. You get some of those good internet lawyer over German I can hire? ;)

Sorry to hear about your router misadventure, I am going to comment on it once this my computer is back on line. The one I am using now isn't really up to the task...

By the way, LiveJournal now use ActiveX on their Youtube link... so, be careful here too. :)

As far as I know, Zedo is an ad-serving company, with banner ads and pop-ups. Beats me why any advertiser would wanna be represented that way...

You probably have more trouble than just them though... :/

I wanted to let you know one more thing, me friend!... If you *can*, sometimes Windows will let you do a partial re-install... it's almost like System Restore, and can sometimes just replace the crucial SYSTEM components without messing with you documents... If you start a reinstall, you might wanna see if you can select that option if it's available too... I've only done one once before (for a friend of chrissawyer) and it worked well, if it gives you that option. Good luck! *chews on wing tip*

Thanks for the wing tip. :D That's an really good idea, I may just try that too, now I am looking for way the get rid of the file in system restore. To do partial re-install, just pop the Windows CD in before starting the Windows, and it will let me selecting the option, right? This wing tip is definitely great wing tip, Thank you. By the way, thanks so much for the phone call check on me the other day. *fluffy hugs* :)
