Lysdexics of the world untie

So potassiumman was over last night, hanging out and playing Majora's Mask. I don't recall exactly how, but he prompted me to look up the Dyslexia article on WikipediaFor those who aren't aware, I am dyslexic. That's part of where my fascination with the topic comes from. It's also a topic that a lot of people know about, but is usually misrepresented and ( Read more... )

Well, I knew from prior discussions/observations that you read slowly, tended towards perfectionism, and had good spatial sense. I don't recall you ever noticeably searching for a word, so you cover that fairly well.

The auditory learner coupled with visual thought is very interesting. I am very much an auditory learner (or at least, I used to be - it hasn't been tested much lately), but my thoughts are very strongly oriented toward words. (As I'm typing this, I can "hear" in my head what I'm planning on typing next - this is pretty much how I operate.)

On the other hand, I've known several people that do not think in words. (Somehow I strongly suspect tempralisis is on that list, but we've never had the discussion.) They all say they learn best visually - not necessarily from text, but from images - and can have a fair bit of difficulty in expressing their ideas, including what actually goes on in their head.

I suspect that growing up in a fairly verbally talented family which regularly held spontaneous debates has something to do with my ability to hide my "missing words", combined with my years in HS debate. However, it still happens to me all the time.

For the most part I tend to work around it when it happens, but my conversations tend to be spattered with pauses while I try to come up with words, and "what's the word I'm looking for" is a pretty common thing for me to say, followed by an inordinately long pause.

I'm glad you found this an interesting topic. If you come up with any more questions, or have anything else on the matter you wish to discuss, drop me an IM. I'm even considering volunteering time if I can find a local group doing research on dyslexia.
