It's supposed to get better after episode 3/4 when the old writers take over. I'm skeptical

I'm skeptical too, but I do hope they recover. It had such promise the first season, despite the letdown of the finale.

I removed it from my Tivo "to be recorded" list a few months ago. The writing is absolute crap, the plots make no sense, characters are obnoxious - ugh. It started off ok - but holy shit, it went down hill fast.

Tim Kring said that he was really only interested in origin stories, and the original plan was to start each season over with new characters and stories, but the characters were so popular that the decision was made to continue with them rather than refreshing the series. Tim said it was much harder to keep writing for the same characters, especially with such powerful characters like Peter, Sylar, and Hiro to contend with. So the result has been the unfathomable crap they've dishing out since the writers' strike.

The last couple episodes they've started wielding it, but with no logic other than "we need to depower this character to make this episode work". I swear it was just like a Star Trek "transporter malfunction".
