Harry Potter and the LJ Fen

What a strange, strange place Livejournal has been these past few weeks, with the widespread anticipation and the elaborate spoiler-policy manifestos and the weird silence Saturday morning as everyone read words inked on paper for a change and the triumphant clocking-in as LJer after LJer proudly announced having finished speed-reading her way ( Read more... )

*giggles helplessly*

I'm a little over halfway through the novel, and I've been saving links for later perusal. Just those on my friendslist occupy two pages, so I can't imagine branching out into the wider HP neighborhood.

I've branched out a little just because my f-list itself is fairly small. Even so, this weekend it consisted quite literally of cut-tag after cut-tag marked "HBP spoilers!!" so I skimmed the book furiously (for plot) just so that I could keep up with all the commentary--and now I'm in the middle of a much slower and more savouring read.

(I don't know when I turned into a slow reader: I used to be very fast, but these days I read so much for style--and tend to act out all the good scenes like little playlets in my head--that it sort of holds me back to a normal speaking pace.)

Thanks!

Fandom Wandom! It's a deodorant, detergant and demagogy, all in one!

Hee! I can't believe I typed that: to me, it sounds like one of those wacky, Cirque-du-Soleil-inflected clown shows. I like your definitions, though--probably because I usually feel in need of some deodorant/detergent whenever I spend more than a few minutes at FW. ;-)

I'd have to do a spoiler-marked post to say in detail what I thought--and I'm still digesting at this point--but in general I find myself sort of moderately positive about it, neither "Best book yet!" or "OMG hate it!"

I like the fact that Harry himself has taken some real strides forward from OotP in terms of his overall emotional maturity, as well as in terms of specific stages of male adolescence (i.e., JKR's moved him on from "petulantly rebelling against authority" to "quite interested in snogging" and as wearisome as the latter stage can be for the reader, it left me wanting to slap him far less often than during OotP).

I'm baffled at the number of people who seem to be reacting to controversial elements of the main plot as if there's no ambiguity to them, because if there's anything that's become clear over the last few books, it's that JKR is playing with us when it comes to the introduction of new pieces of information, making us think we know something, then overturning our assumptions, then overturning them again.
