dream poem

Feb 18, 2003 11:40

I woke up with this poem in my head the other day... I wonder if I'm plagiarizing Ogden Nash at all. It sounds kind of like something he'd write.

Now I'll be admittin'
I've rightly thought that
What once was a kitten
Is later a cat.
But I don't now think
Where once I thunk
That a baby skink
Becomes a skunk.

I think that's pretty cool. :) I'll bet hitchhiker can tell you where you might have read it before, if it isn't your original poem.

Reminds me of Richard Lederer. I agree with mactavish. If anyone will know, it's hitchhiker :)

Oh yeah - I can see the Ledereresque qualities. :)

*giggle* *applause*

For what it's worth, a quick google (using the search terms: kitten cat skink skunk) didn't return anything even vaguely redolent of your lovely little ditty. However, searching for "kitten" & "cat" & "ogden nash" returned this little aphorism: "The trouble with a kitten is that when it grows up, it's always a cat." But no poems. :-)

The trouble with a kitten is that
When it grows up, it's always a cat

Willing to bet that was the way Nash had it :)

*blush* *taking a bow*

that is, in fact, the Nash two-liner that I was thinking of. I've seen it in print the way that hitchhiker has it formatted below.

LOL!! Definitely channelling someone, but I don't think it's Nash. Silverstein, perhaps.

(All the difference between channelling and plagiarising, btw. It's your poem - be happy :))
