Two unrelated questions

Firstly, is Electric Shock Treatment still used in psychiatric hospitals? Secondly, can anyone recommend any autobiographical or fictional books about mental illness? Over the last few weeks I have read 'The Catcher In The Rye', 'Prozac Nation', 'Girl, Interrupted', and 'The Bell Jar'. I'm after more suggestions. Thanks in advance ( Read more... )

Firstly, yes. It's still being used. I have been in groups before with patients undergoing them. Hell, my roommate in the psych. unit earlier this year was undergoing them.

Second... other than the ones listed, I can think of a couple others... Patricia McCormick's Cut, Terry Spencer Hesser's Kissing Doorknobs, Andrew Solomon's Noonday Demon, and Alison Rose's Better Than Sane.

Hope that helps.

i'm reading : "go ask alice" by: anonymous
right now.. and it is absolutely fucking amazing.. its more about a girl and her venture into drugs.. and just her life in general.. but i think it has strong basis on what we go through with mental illness as well..

it is simply amazing.. check it out~

I have a friend who has had it used on her... and even my mother had it administered to her without her knowledge or consent back in the days of Charter hostpitals.

there's "when rabbit howls" - which is a book on MPD... another one is called "broken child" try a google search on books related to neurosis and emotional disorders.

as i understand it, EST is only used in extreme cases and not very often.

but i'm no expert.

i read "A Bright Red Scream" which is about cutting and abuse. i found it facinating. i don't remember who it's by.

good luck
