Goodbye Sherman

Aug 31, 2005 21:06

Sherman died tonight.  He ate breakfast this morning, but wouldn't eat tonight.  We took him to the emergency vet, only to have him die while they were trying to treat him.

We are obviously very worried about Juniper now.

Not much else I can say or think or do at the moment.

Sherman
1996 - 2005

Thanks. He was exceptionally long-lived. Such a special bunny in many ways.

Thank you. Yes, most people don't realize rabbits can live that long. Most house rabbits I hear about die after a year or so, but that is because most house rabbits live alone in hutches or cages, without good, unlimited hay to eat, fresh veggies daily, and companionship.

But no matter how well they are treated, for a large albino rabbit (known for having health problems), Sherman lived a long time. Though he was getting increasingly lethargic due to his age, he had never been sick. Then he doesn't eat one evening, and he dies right after getting to the vet. I imagine the shock of being at the vet and getting poked and prodded caused his cardiac arrest, but we were damned either way. Once rabbits get sick they go fast, so he probably would have died overnight without veterinary care. No matter what you do, you end up second guessing yourself.

i think thats a much better way to go though than drawn out suffering. like the poor rat i had put to sleep recently. even then, the vet did a terrible job and it was very sad.

Thank you. We knew that Sherman was very old, but we just thought we'd have a bit more warning.
