Being a homo in some super Christian town in the backwoods of Alabama isn't going to be all that much better for your health than living in Afghanistan. I mean, sure, you're not going to be publicly hanged and stoned by the authorities, but that sure isn't going to stop you from getting the shit beat out of you in a back alley and left for dead--

Although Dubai is relatively liberal compared to the rest of the Islamic world, homosexuality is an extreme taboo in that realm, at least from my understanding.

We claim to be a progressive society, yet there hasn't been much in terms of strides we as a collective society have made to back up that claim. Yes, it is more accepted than it was before and we are featured predominately in pop culture (unfortunately usually in a stereotypical way, but at least it's *some* representation). However, that seems to be it.

In contrast, the only representation in the Islamic world of homosexuals is that of those hanged in public squares and the like. I somehow doubt that Dubai, being the nouveau Club Med that it is, is entirely accepting considering its backdrop.

I'm not sure they'll have any choice but to deal with it. Homos tend to be the wealthier, more discriminating consumers. If they want to compete on an international scale, they're going to be forced to chill out and let a few things slide. With it comes a lot of liberal and cost effective open-mindedness that it will be difficult for a metropolitan city to ignore if it expects to be a major player in the world economy.

There was a report a few months ago on a news program (20/20, Dateline, or something) where a young French/Saudi teenager was raped by three men out in the desert. He was arrested by the police the next day for having commited "indecent homosexual acts."

The rapists got away pretty much scott-free and this kid was sent back to France with no justice.

He was straight.
