The 100th day

Mar 12, 2008 18:57

Today marks the 100th day since we announced SUP's purchase of LiveJournal from Six Apart, the formation of LiveJournal, Inc, and goals for the first 100 days. We've made some amazing progress since that announcement, and we're really proud of what we've accomplished in such a short period of time: the team in the U.S. is growing, we've gained a ( Read more... )

Hi, I'm Jason Shellen, VP of Product Development for LiveJournal. I just wanted to clarify LiveJournal's stance before there is any further misunderstanding about what we are trying to do. An FAQ about the account levels was updated prior to our news post. It states ( ... )

As opposed to rationally determing that Plus is better than Basic? What a low opinion you have of your fellow users.

It's not insulting to new users to suggest that lots of them, just like most people, are lazy and tend not to change default settings.

It's not insulting to call a group of people lazy and unthinking? Huh. Strange world you're living in there.

I'm living in a world where people's natural tendency is to be lazy, and I don't consider that word to be automatically insulting. Please note the clause "just like most people": if I specifically point out that LJ's users are no worse than anyone else, how am I insulting them?

It doesn't matter how big the group is. You could say that 99% of the world population is lazy and that would still be insulting them.

No, it really wouldn't.

That's very true. I've created new accounts numerous times and set them to Basic, only to find that even though I deliberately clicked Basic, I STILL had a Plus account. Which meant going through the rigamarole of changing it to a Basic account, when it SHOULD have been one in the first place.

This has happened to me too. I've had to reset them numerous times. It's not just that it's the default -- I have found it to be impossible to register for a Basic account in one step. I'm sure the official position of LJ is that this is a glitch. Bull.

They'd done everything short of eliminating Basic accounts to ensure that no one would have one, anyway. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that they decided to just take the plunge.

One would think that you'd think of existing LJers as your best way of getting new users-- people sign up to keep track of their friends and comment on their posts. In fact, I suspect you do, and you just didn't want to agitate your userbase by pointing out that their new friends will lack the options they signed up with.

Many current users register for new accounts ALL THE TIME. If you had any kind of familiarity with your customer base you would KNOW that.
