Hi, I'm Jason Shellen, VP of Product Development for LiveJournal. I just wanted to clarify LiveJournal's stance before there is any further misunderstanding about what we are trying to do. An FAQ about the account levels was updated prior to our news post. It states ( ... )

Does this warrant a: YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG! ?

You don't want the advertisers to know that there are fewer unique customers for their ads than they think.

I think the real trick here is they are trying to drive away anyone with a brain, since those are the people who use adblockers.

I have a basic account and was okay with seeing ads on plus account journals, because they paid for the service to continue. I didn't seek out an adblocker until lj turned on the image previews and didn't provide any way to turn them off.

The image previews really made browsing my friends list unpleasant, and when I found out that there is an adblocker setting to shut them down, I installed the adblocker immediately.

Since then I've had to make a determined effort to disable the adblocker for the other sites I visit, because I want my visits to add to their revenues, because it will mean they will stay in business.

But for lj, the adblocker stays on because it is the only way to avoid the image previews.

Google mozilla adblocker.

You can also turn them off on your own journal, it's in setting or something.

/sorry, lazy. let me know if you need more help.

if you go here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/ you can uncheck the option for 'Enable graphic previews on external links within your journal'.

That only works within username.livejournal.com - it does not work on anyone else's journal, nor username.livejournal.com/friends (IIRC - I use adblock, so I don't remember exactly).

It should work on username.livejournal.com/friends, as I don't use an adblocker and don't see them anymore after turning that option off. And believe me, the instant that started that's the first thing I tried to disable.

If you click on the little balloon there is an option to disable them sitewide. I only ever see them anymore when I'm on a public computer.

Despite clicking on it MULTIPLE times, I have NEVER been able to get them turned off.

Apparently it's something in my cookie settings that I can't figure out, as they're ON, just like I was told they needed to be.

That depends on a cookie from snap.com itself, though, which many users do not want.
