Well we really screwed this one up…

May 31, 2007 00:47

For reasons we are still trying to figure out what was supposed to be a well planned attempt to clean up a few journals that were violating LiveJournal's policies that protect minors turned into a total mess. I can only say I’m sorry, explain what we did wrong and what we are doing to correct these problems and explain what we were trying to do but ( Read more... )

As somebody who works with the LJ team, I can definitely say that everybody I talked to is really sorry that we messed up and that it took us a while to get our act together and let you know what's up. We'll try to do better.

Thanks for actually responding to my text; I really wasn't expecting a response at all.

Why did it take so long? Why did Barak have time to talk to news sites, and you have time to comment on Metafilter, before ANY kind of apologies came TO the users here?

Not even apologies, just information. Why on earth did you give an interview to CNet before even saying a *word* to the users here?

Oh, cool, that makes sense. Sure, you had two days and enough time to talk to every media outsource that would listen but you didn't have the common fucking decency to direct anything to us.

Do better? Here's a hint: when a bunch of people are giving you a hundred dollars a year, maybe even PRETEND to give a shit about how they feel. Add that to the next meeting between complimenting Barak's new tie and talking about some lady in HR's kid.

You fucked up beyond recognition and some trite little apology, from you OR from some random CEO intent on censoring whatever might make some invisible kid cry while simultaneously making money of OUR creativity, will not fix what LJ has ruined. Congratu-fucking-lations. Now you guys will DEFINITELY get into heaven, now that the dirty, dirty people have been washed from your hands.

censoring whatever might make some invisible kid cry

You know, THIS is the ugliest thing I've seen coming from all of this: the proliferation of people who make statements that make it clear that to them, child rape and pedophilia are just not a big deal when you put them up against such HUGELY IMPORTANT MATTERS as, you know, FANDOM. I mean, holy shit! We could err on the side of kids not getting raped, or we could err on the side of PROTECTING FANDOM! THE CHOICE, SHE IS CLEAR.

I mean, I think LJ handled this in a mind-bogglingly stupid way too, but can you at least admit that they have a valid concern in trying to protect children from goddamn pedophiles? That child rape is a bigger deal than "making some invisible kid cry"? I can show you some victims of child rape if you want, make them less invisible. Just a thought ( ... )

As someone who works with the LJ team, you probably shouldn't have gone to another site hours before any official LJ announcement and made statements that the LJ policies had changed - the hostile tone didn't help any.

I'm pretty sure I would be fired if I made the company I work for look like that.

Seriously, and same here. My job would be gone in a heartbeat.

And this is so a complete joke. Nothing like talking to the media before even mentioning a site-wide hysteria.

Yeah... That would be a good way to piss your company off. For that matter. If they had the time and energy to do that, why didn't they have the time or energy to, ooooh, I don't know, drop US a line here at LJ?

I hate people sometimes. LJ Fails. I'm still looking for alternatives.
