The story overview sounds interesting enough. I've never read it, but it kind of reminds me of the Three Body Problem (as described by my wife). It probably has nothing similar in reality =P

And DnD group dynamics is the hardest thing about playing (over than time commitment, I guess). That's a major fear that keeps me from trying local groups. And about this guy, people change, so maybe he used to be a good player and now sucks? Who knows, but it's probably best to talk with everyone else and try to get rid of him.
