Chapter 7
Ohno observed the newcomer for a long moment utterly confused. He wasn’t sure what he should do now. Suddenly, as if he had just noticed what was happening, he drew the cloak tighter around his shoulders and enjoyed the heat slowly creeping back into his limbs. At the same time disquieting thoughts rose in him:
‘He… he knows now. He has seen how I dress outside of work. He will tell my boss and then I will surely be fired…! No one wants a host who can’t even afford proper clothes!’
This inner turmoil slowly turned to fear and made him regard the young man more and more hesitantly.
“Ninomiya-san, I…”
As if he could, once again, read his thoughts, Ninomiya softly put a finger to Ohno’s lips and drew the cloak even tighter around the host’s shivering form. His cheeks turned faintly pink, not from the cold this time, but because Ohno was a little embarrassed by the way his former customer touched him so lightly and gently.
A smile bloomed on Ninomiya’s face, but he also looked slightly worried - but Ohno was once again having difficulties reading the young man’s look. For a long time now he hadn’t been sure what was hiding behind his kind smiles.
“You are a little scatterbrained, aren’t you? You don’t walk around outside like this in these temperatures,” he said softly, lifted his arm and smoothed his hand over Ohno’s hair, dislocating a few snow flakes. “Come on, we’ll go warm you up…”
Upon Ninomiya’s gentle touch, Ohno closed his eyes; in that moment the tension and fear over losing his job were completely forgotten.
“I’m sorry … for being a bother…” he whispered, sniffling slightly, before drawing the cloak even closer and following Ninomiya - wherever he was going to lead him now.
‘He’s as nice as always… But when I saw him at the club earlier today, I thought he was just like all the other men… when he really is totally different…’ Ohno’s gaze wandered to the young man and he watched him walk for a while. Ninomiya seemed to be always smiling, even if it didn’t show on his lips. Ohno couldn’t describe it, but the young man always looked friendly, happy. As if the smile never left his eyes.
It didn’t take long until they reached a much more pleasant neighbourhood. You could see that the people living here were richer, the houses were bigger and more beautiful, the environment more peaceful. Ohno hadn’t known that such a neighbourhood existed so close to his own home.
‘Such big houses everywhere. If you live here you surely have more than enough money.’
But despite the excitement the houses had caused, he could feel how the cold crept further along his body with every step he took. His cold, wet feet made themselves known, the snow made its way into his tattered shoes. And the cloak warming his shoulders could do nothing against it. But wait, Ninomiya had to be…!
“Ninomiya-san! Your cloak! You must be freezing!” The thought occurred to him suddenly and he stopped quickly, looking at the young man imploringly and lightly pulling on the cloak.
But Ninomiya just continued walking, he even laughed shortly. Although it was nice to hear his former customer laugh, it didn’t make Ohno worry any less. It was the middle of the night after all, it was cold and more and more snow was falling!
“I think… out of the two of us, you’re the one freezing more. Don’t worry about it,” he replied, again sporting the smile that caused butterflies to explode in Ohno’s stomach. The silent grin following it didn’t make a difference; it just left Ohno feeling even more confused. He didn’t think he would ever understand this man.
The young host could do nothing but start walking, catch up to Ninomiya and walk beside him again silently. But a second later he felt Ninomiya’s arm around his shoulders. He swallowed hard and tried to ignore the rising tension. What was Ninomiya doing?
“Well… we’ll be there soon, then it won’t be cold anymore…” Ninomiya’s soft voice reached the host’s ear.
For a second his hand rubbed along Ohno’s freezing back - warming him up -, but as suddenly as it had appeared it disappeared into Ninomiya’s pocket again. And even though the gesture hadn’t lasted more than a few seconds, the host felt much warmer than before.
Ohno also realized how safe he felt in Ninomiya’s company. All the problems he had with other men, especially the other customers at the club, just didn’t exist when he was with Ninomiya. He felt good, almost safe. Was the young man’s friendly aura responsible for that?
That he was slowly but surely beginning to enjoy what Ninomiya was making him feel was ignored by the host - the thought was too absurd at this point.
“Here we are,” the young man disrupted his train of thought and stopped in front of a beautiful, big house. Ohno didn’t have time to take a closer look, because Ninomiya suddenly closed the distance between them. He was close enough to make Ohno’s breathing speed up.
‘Ninomiya-san…?’
Only a few centimetres separated his face from Ohno’s. A smirk spread across his lips, he lifted his hands and slipped his fingers into the pocket of Ohno’s cloak. He softly caressed Ohno’s fingers until he had passed his hand and … took his keys from the pocket.
Ohno only noticed that he had held his breath when he took a breath of relief. He had had no idea what Ninomiya had been up to just now, but he had to admit that he probably wouldn’t have had a problem with whatever Ninomiya decided to do.
The host tried to get rid of these thoughts somehow, and watched Ninomiya unlock the door and invite him to step into his warm parlour. Again his gaze was fixed on the young man rather than on the apartment. He didn’t even realize that Ninomiya was really taking him to his apartment. He wasn’t aware what this meant… and what the consequences could be.
After taking a few steps into the beautiful house he gathered his courage to look around. Everything was huge, modern, very beautifully decorated and expensive-looking. Every little detail seemed to say that whoever lived here obviously had money. Ohno felt tiny in his shabby clothes and tattered shoes.
‘His parents must be really rich…’ he thought. Ninomiya himself was much too young to have built such a fortune.
Only when he silently took his cloak did Ohno’s gaze return to him, attentive and awed he watched every one of his movements.
‘I… can’t not trust him… He’s so nice. And the kisses tonight… Well, that’s why you go to such a club.’
Ohno kept his eyes on Ninomiya, watched as he put the cloak over a radiator, bent down on his knees in front of a magnificent shoe cabinet, opened it and took out two slippers that looked extremely soft and warm. He put the slippers down in front of Ohno’s feet and looked at the young host with an inviting smile.
“Thanks…” Ohno whispered, slightly embarrassed. The customer’s simple gestures moved him more every time. Ohno took off his wet and tattered slippers and slipped into the new, soft ones. He sighed in contentment. That felt so good…
“Something warm to drink would be good for you right now, I think… what do you want? Coffee? Tea? Cappuccino?” Ninomiya asked, smiling while he walked down the corridor, in what Ohno guessed was the direction of the kitchen.
“A cup of tea… maybe,” the host answered quietly. He followed the young man through the house and into the kitchen hesitantly, once there he leaned against the door frame and watched as Ninomiya put on the kettle. But instead of busying himself with making tea, the young man turned back to Ohno, took a few steps towards him and looked at him quizzically for a moment.
“But first you need dry clothes, ne?” he murmured quietly, before the soft smile curved his lips again. “Come with me!” And he walked away, past Ohno, who turned around immediately and followed him to the first floor.
Slowly Ohno started to ask himself if Ninomiya might be living alone after all. They didn’t meet anyone on their way to the first floor and saw nothing that suggested the presence of a family. The apartment seemed empty. It was almost disturbing.
Ninomiya opened a door, entered a rather small room and Ohno’s eyes grew wide as saucers. The young man apparently had an extra room for his clothes, because the room was furnished with nothing but wardrobes and a big mirror.
“Take a look to see if there’s something you like that might fit…” True to his words Ninomiya opened the doors of two of the wardrobes, pointed to the stylish clothes and left the room.
Ohno remained in the dressing room, alone and more than a little out of his depth. Was he really supposed to just choose something? Out of these expensive and stylish clothes? The host swallowed lightly, turned to the first wardrobe and started looking for something that didn’t look quite as expensive. After a couple of minutes he finally found something relatively simple, but very warm. Shyly, he made his way back downstairs to Ninomiya, who was waiting in the kitchen for him with a cup of tea.
“You look cute! The clothes suit you very well!” Ninomiya complimented, followed by a wink. “Let’s sit down in the living room. It’s more comfortable.”
Ohno’s cheeks reddened and he had to lower his gaze when he heard the compliment. Only when he saw Ninomiya walk past him did he look back up again shyly and follow him.
His cheeks turned even redder when he saw Ninomiya sit down on a very comfortable-looking sofa and pat the spot next to him invitingly, a soft, somehow cute grin on his lips as usual. With a rapidly beating heart Ohno sat down, but he couldn’t look at Ninomiya while he did it. He preferred looking around the big, beautifully decorated living room, gazed at the expensive-looking paintings on the walls and the big television.
‚So this is what he lives like… All the rooms are really big… Our apartment would fit in here three or four times…’ was the only thing the host could think of while he reached for his cup and took a sip of the warm and soothing tea.
“Thank you very much, Ninomiya-san.” Ohno bowed slightly. He was more than grateful to the young man for taking care of him. Ninomiya only smiled and shook his head.
“You’re not at work here, Satoshi-kun. Stop being so polite. Call me Nino.”
Ohno pressed his lips together uncertainly for a second, then he nodded in understanding.
“Hai… Nino-san.”
There was silence between them for a moment, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable silence during which Ohno was plagued by thoughts of what to say next. No, when Ohno and Ninomiya were silent, it was comfortable, relaxed. And he didn’t have the urge to say something; he just wanted to sit here in the warm, homey apartment. Ohno leaned back into the sofa cushions, he could fall asleep right away, he was sure.
‘But you can’t do that, Satoshi… You can’t just fall asleep, that’s impossibly rude!’
But Ohno wasn’t able to fight against it for long, slowly sleep won the battle. The tea warmed his stomach pleasantly, his back rested against the comfortable sofa and Ohno felt his eyes droop. His breathing evened out, his head now lay fully on the sofa’s headrest and Ohno fell into a deep sleep.
‘Why am I hesitating… ? Why? He’s sleeping. He doesn’t notice a thing. He won’t even feel it.’
Ohno moved in his sleep, turned his head to the side, baring his creamy throat to Ninomiya.
As if a switch had been turned in his head, he was above Ohno in one big leap, his head only millimetres away from Ohno’s throat, his mouth opened to bite.
Fine lips touched soft skin. But Ninomiya hesitated.
The urge inside him was too strong, the hunger even worse, but he couldn’t do it. He couldn’t hurt the peacefully sleeping host.
A terrifying hiss escaped Ninomiya’s throat and a moment later he was in his kitchen, ripping open his cupboard and giving in to his thirst.
And Ohno slept on, unknowingly, his mouth curved into a slight smile, on the sofa.
