Chapter 8
The next morning dawned and Ohno found himself in a very soft, very big bed when he awoke slowly. It had been a long time since he had felt this good, this relaxed while sleep was gradually seeping out of his bones. The sun was shining into the room, lighting it up beautifully and Ohno lay in the bed smiling, snuggled down further into the blanket and sighed contently.
A moment later he asked himself where the hell he was.
But after he had looked around, more confused than relaxed, he remembered.
‘I must have fallen asleep at Nino-san’s home last night,’ he thought, smiling again, before he yawned widely.
‘Nino-san…’
The young host stretched, then decided to leave the nice, soft bed and walked out of the room. With quiet steps he sneaked along the hall to the room he knew to be the kitchen. Carefully he looked into the room, let his searching gaze wander.
“Nino-san…?” he asked hesitantly, his voice sounding incredibly shy.
And then there was movement at the kitchen table. So Ohno hadn’t just imagined the figure sitting there, like he had thought in the first place. He watched as Ninomiya stood up from where he was sitting on the bench and, to Ohno’s great surprise, looked at him in confusion for an instant. The look on the young man’s face was changed, gone was the soft, friendly look. But a second later the smile was back on his lips, reached his eyes, and Ninomiya looked like he always did.
“Satoshi-kun, good morning!” he greeted him kindly and took a few steps towards the host.
Ohno, also, took a few steps forward, before bowing politely.
“I’m sorry for falling asleep yesterday. And thank you very much for letting me stay here.”
Having said that, he looked up again, met Ninomiya’s smiling eyes and watched as he stretched a little. Ohno couldn’t help but think it was cute, the movement looked incredibly natural for Ninomiya.
“Ah, no problem. You looked so sweet, I couldn’t make myself wake you!”
Ohno had to lower his gaze at that while he tried not to showcase the blush that was rising on his cheeks again. There was just something in the way Ninomiya acted that managed to embarrass the host over and over. But when he looked up again he automatically sneaked a glance at the clock and had to see that it was much too late already.
“Nino-san… I have to go to work now. Well … I’ll just go change quickly and leave… alright?” he spoke quickly, bowed deeply and graced the young man with a brilliant smile. The gesture was meant to show how grateful he was for the way Ninomiya had taken care of him. Ohno was still having a hard time putting it into words.
But instead of the friendly reaction he had hoped for and expected, all he got was a bemused smile.
“Have you looked outside yet?“ was all Nino said, then he nodded toward the window. Ohno followed his prompting and his eyes widened in excitement. Snow…
“I’m not letting you leave in those thin clothes of yours…” And then the customer had taken his hand and was towing him up to the dressing room. Once there he seemed to think for a second before taking a very warm-looking coat and giving it to Ohno.
“Try it on to see if it fits…”
The host could do nothing but stare at Ninomiya, perplex, he had been surprised enough already when the young man had suddenly taken his hand. And now he was holding out this obviously expensive, gorgeous coat to him, whose very look and thick cloth seemed to promise incredible warmth in the face of the cold outside.
“What? But … But I do have a few other things at home! I really do!” Ohno said quickly, once again trying to sound convincing, but Nino wasn’t even truly listening to him. “Nino-san…”
Sighing and feeling guilty, he did the only thing he could and put on the coat. To his dismay he had to admit that it fit perfectly.
“Hm? Does it fit?” was Ninomiya’s only reply.
“Well… yes. But is this really alright?” Again Ohno had to sigh, he was feeling guiltier by the second. Ninomiya had done too much for him already, had simply taken him to his home, taken care of him and even let him stay the night. In a bed so soft Ohno had only ever encountered in his dreams. And now he was supposed to accept more gifts?
“I’ll bring the clothes back!” he declared after a moment’s hesitation, only to have Ninomiya shake his head slightly.
“They don’t fit me anymore… so don’t you dare bring them back!” he said, grinning, then he looked at his watch. “What time do you have to be at work?”
Ohno followed Ninomiya’s gaze to his watch and grimaced. “In half an hour.”
It would be hard to make it on time, he had to go home and change first after all. Not to mention that he didn’t feel like going to work today at all. Work was even more unpleasant in cold weather and not even the snow’s beauty could help that.
“I’d… better go now…” A small, rather sad smile appeared on the host’s lips, showing how much he did not want to leave Ninomiya. Who knew when he would see him again? If ever…
“Thanks for the clothes,” he added quickly, turned toward the door but stopped right away, when he felt Ninomiya took his hand again.
“Come with me!” Ninomiya’s voice sounded almost commanding as he pulled Ohno in the opposite direction. Ohno could only do as he was told.
He didn’t want to do anything else either.
Soon he found himself in a big garage, standing in front of a sleek sports car, unable to close his mouth.
“Get in! This’ll be faster!” A voice commanded next to him and he could only watch as Ninomiya got into the expensive car.
This was getting ridiculous. Nevertheless Ohno would be lying if he said he didn’t like Nino’s caring manner - but now he was, once again, spending money on him. Slowly the host got into the car, hesitantly and unsure, looked at the driver and swallowed.
“Are you really ok with driving me home…?”
But Ninomiya didn’t seem to notice his hesitation. Quickly he opened the automatic garage gate and steered the car onto the street.
When they passed the spot in which they had met the night before, Ohno thought for a second that Ninomiya would drop him off here, but the young men kept driving, only asking where he was supposed to go. Only a few minutes later they arrived outside Ohno’s dilapidated apartment building.
Slowly his gaze moved to the driver. Ohno was about to say goodbye when he saw Ninomiya open the door and get out of the car.
‘Why does he get out with me…?’ he thought, surprised.
When Ohno himself got out of the car, he looked at Ninomiya questioningly, but the only response he got was a soft smile that confused him even more.
There he stood; the former customer at whose house he had spent the night, whose closeness he had enjoyed so much. The customer who wasn’t like all the others.
“Well then… take care of yourself, ne…”
Ninomiya’s voice sounded oddly distorted.
And Ohno could see something in his eyes change.
“Are you alright, Nino-san…?”
But his words were ignored and a moment later he felt two arms wrap themselves around him.
“Bye …”
Ohno was released again jerkily; Ninomiya looked him up and down with a smile that suddenly seemed wrong, artificial. As if a well-constructed façade had slipped.
“Goodbye, Nino-san. I’ll … see you soon, ok?”
But Ohno’s question went unanswered. Ninomiya turned around and quickly disappeared into his car, without looking back.
“Nino-san…” the host murmured, now not at all sure what he should make of all this. He stayed outside in the cold a little longer, stared after the car’s taillights, until he heard his mother call his name.
“Satoshi! Where were you last night? We were so worried!” His mother’s gaze moved lower, apparently she had noticed his new clothes.
“Where did you get those expensive clothes?”
Ohno felt her tug on his coat. Nino’s coat.
“You didn’t buy them, did you? They’re too expensive! We can’t afford this and you know it!”
And suddenly Ohno didn’t feel the least bit inclined to give his mother an answer.
“Baka! Nino-san? Why are you calling him that? He’s just another customer. And if he doesn’t want to come here anymore, then he won’t! Besides, he’s not good for you anyway. He’s just like all the other guys around here! Maybe he was nice to you at first, but sooner or later he will only want one thing! So, cheer up, ok?” Sho’s forceful voice reached him, but not even the smile he sent him could take the sting out of his words.
Ohno was yearning for him.
For days now he had known no other topic for conversation, for weeks he had thought about nothing else. And for roughly three months he hadn’t seen him.
Ninomiya.
‘He looked so sad when he left…’ Memories of the last time they had met rose in Ohno. The snow. But now it had long been spring and there was no sign of the white coldness.
A quiet sigh left his mouth, making Sho grimace. But before either of them could say more on the subject, they were interrupted by a cheerful ‘good evening’ from right behind them. From the corner of his eye Ohno saw Sho turn around quickly, seamlessly change gears and bow politely to the newcomer.
“Good evening,” he said in his host-voice. A second later Ohno felt Sho’s elbow nudge his ribs and he, also, finally reacted.
“Good evening.”
After Ohno had bowed politely, he lifted his gaze and scrutinized the customer. He was young. Very young.
Too young for this club and Ohno was painfully reminded of another customer.
“I am Sho and this is Satoshi-kun. Do you want us to keep you company?” he heard Sho speak next to him, his voice perfectly polite.
Ohno saw a smile blossom on the customer’s lips that seemed to grow with every second that passed. He looked nice - but in a completely unique way.
“Sho-kun, Satoshi-kun! Very pleased to meet you!” he said cheerfully.
“I am Masaki!”
