every time i watch a dvd commentary i think, hmm, i really must post about dvd commentaries on my livejournal one day. then i wake up the next morning and i forget. TODAY, TODAY WILL BE DIFFERENT

I can't watch DVD commentaries. I just can't. I just wanna watch the movie. Once The Boy and I tried watching the director's commentary on The Ninth Gate, and we got about as far as Roman Polanski saying, "Hi! I'm Roman Polanski. I like to make movies that I'd want to see..." and then I dissolved into jokes about making my answering machine message, "Hi! I'm Roman Polanski! I like to make movies." and we turned it off.
SO I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF EVERYTHING ANYONE SAYS ON A DVD COMMENTARY IS BANAL. I sort of imagine it might be fun, but I don't know.
Oh! I watched one for a Simpsons episode once and it was kinda cool because the writers were doing it and they're so geeky and said things like, "See those names on the apartment buzzer listings? Those are the names of other Simpsons writers!" and that was neat. Perhaps for a show I was obsessive about, I would put on the commentary, but...I've done it once for the Simpsons and never again.
thats a very odd roman polanski quote. its so completely not the sort of thing i imagine roman polanski saying. mind you, i mostly imagine roman polanski saying things like 'im roman polanski and i absolutely dont like to have sex with underage girls, absolutely not, what a nonsense', so you know.
yeah, if a dvd commentary is going to be worth a good goddamn then it needs to be really really pointlessly geeky. tell me something i dont know! tell me something i dont need to know! i know that the people in this series are extraordinary actors! i know this because ive just watched an entire boxset of them acting! i do not undertake such an expenditure of time lightly you know!
ive never seen arrested development. maybe i shold watch the dvd commentary without watching the actual programme. maybe that would be an interesting exercise.
I never watch the commentaries because I think they are going to reveal everyone as lunks, including me for watching it. Still, this post was hilarious. Thanks for getting me to laugh.
it would be so much more fun if they did a commentary where someone was like, 'okay, that guy? ASSHOLE. asshole asshole asshole. if i never work with him again, it will be too soon. if i have to share a continent with him, that will be tough going'. even as a joke, that would be better.
the boy contends that if you watch any criteron collection film made before 1970, the commentary is worthwhile because it has actual film critics doing the talking (instead of the coleslaw coordinators).
