If you have sound problems on Linux, do this:
(1) Install
PulseAudio. Instructions for Ubuntu are
here.
(2) Enjoy.
Seriously, PulseAudio needs to be set up as the default in Linux distributions now. Because it tries to emulate every known way for Linux apps to access the sound card (with the notable exception of aRts, but you can upgrade to KDE 4
