I played around with C14-labelled sucrose for a master's project that never got off the ground, but the radiation from that stuff can be blocked with gloves.
There was a great story (before my time there) about a guy walking down the street with a Geiger counter turned on for no real reason. It started going crazy, and he realized it was going crazy because a line of Argentine ants were registering as radioactive. After following the trail, it turned out they had gotten into some researcher's C14-labelled sugar.
Imagine all the super-heroes who can trace their origins to that event...

Actually, I've used C-14 in the past with Ascorbic Acid. In fact, I used it quite flagrantly. Carelessly, even.
Er... I mean.... oh crap, don't tell radiation safety.
